New Trial is a 2017 South Korean legal drama film directed by Kim Tae-yoon. The movie tells the story of a young man named Hyun-woo (played by Kang Ha-neul) who is wrongfully accused of murdering a taxi driver while under the influence of alcohol. Jung-Eun Lee plays his mother while Ju-Seon Eo portrays his lawyer. The movie begins with the scene of the crime, where a taxi driver is murdered in an alley in the middle of the night. The police quickly identify Hyun-woo as the prime suspect because he was found stumbling around the same area at the time of the crime. Despite having no recollection of the night due to being heavily intoxicated, Hyun-woo is charged with the murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Fast forward to thirteen years later, Hyun-woo is still in prison, but his case receives renewed attention when lawyer Joon-young (played by Ju-Seon Eo) takes on the case. Joon-young, who has a history of defending clients on death row, is initially reluctant to take on Hyun-woo's case because he's already been convicted. However, he is intrigued by the fact that the case seems to have more to it and soon discovers that the case was mishandled from the beginning.

As Joon-young delves deeper into Hyun-woo's case, he uncovers a web of corruption and deceit within the legal system. He finds key pieces of evidence that the previous lawyer missed and discovers that there was a witness who saw someone else in the alley around the time of the murder. Joon-young's dedication to uncovering the truth becomes a race against time as he tries to save Hyun-woo from spending the rest of his life behind bars.

One of the strengths of New Trial is the realistic portrayal of Korean court procedures. The movie does an excellent job of illustrating the intricacies of the legal system and the difficulties that lawyers face when trying to defend their clients. The characters are well developed, and the actors deliver powerful performances that put viewers on the edge of their seats.

Another strong aspect of the movie is its exploration of the psychological toll that being in prison can have on a person. The movie doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of prison life, and the audience is given a sense of the despair and isolation that Hyun-woo experiences while he is incarcerated.

New Trial is a powerful and emotional film that is not to be missed. The movie raises important questions about justice, corruption, and the value of human life. It's a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of the truth. Overall, New Trial is a gripping legal drama that will leave a lasting impact on viewers long after the movie has ended.

New Trial is a 2017 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 58 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.8.
