In the 1992 horror movie Netherworld, Michael Bendetti plays a young man named Corey Thornton who has recently lost his mother. After receiving a letter from a lawyer informing him of his mother's inheritance, Corey and his girlfriend arrive in a small town to claim it. Upon arriving, Corey discovers that his mother was into some strange and occult practices, and it's clear that the townspeople were wary of her. Corey's mother has left him a large estate, which includes an old mansion, a lot of land, and some strange scrolls.
Shortly after arriving, Corey begins to have strange and vivid dreams that seem to be linked to the estate. He also discovers that there is a mysterious woman, Lydia (Denise Gentile), who seems to know a lot about his mother and the estate.
As Corey tries to uncover the truth behind his mother's death and the strange things happening on his estate, he learns that she was involved in a Satanic cult that is still thriving in the area. The cult leader, Karloff (Bruce Glover), has also set his sights on Corey and wants him to join their cause.
As Corey becomes more embroiled in the cult's practices, he begins to realize that not all of his mother's inheritance is as innocent as he thought. There are some dark secrets hiding in the shadows of this small town, and Corey must confront them head-on if he wants to survive.
The movie builds suspense with its supernatural themes and a cast of creepy characters. The old mansion, with its dark and creepy atmosphere, adds to the unease of the movie. The movie is a slow-burn thriller that slowly builds up the tension towards the final climax. Anjanette Comer puts in an excellent performance as the psychic and mother's long-time friend, and her scenes add depth to what is otherwise a simple horror movie.
Netherworld's themes are not new in the horror genre, but the movie's execution is done well. Michael Bendetti does a decent job in his role as the lead and carries the film throughout. The special effects and practical makeup work are particularly impressive given that the movie was made in the early '90s.
Overall, Netherworld is an enjoyable cult movie that is worth watching for its mixture of horror and supernatural themes. The film is hard to find on DVD or streaming, but it's worth the watch for any horror fan looking for scares and suspense.
