Naughty Marietta is a 1935 romantic musical film starring the dynamic duo of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy as the two leads, Marietta and Lieutenant Governor of New Orleans, Warrington. Set in 18th century France, the film follows the story of Marietta, a countess who, to avoid being forced into a marriage she doesn't want, escapes to New Orleans with a group of French girls who are to be sold as indentured servants.
Once in New Orleans, Marietta is sold to a man named Bolduc, who is initially interested in her romantically, but soon learns that she is not one to be easily controlled. It is at this point that she meets the Lieutenant Governor, Warrington, who is on a mission to clean up the city of its pirate problem.
Warrington takes an instant liking to Marietta and starts to do everything in his power to help her and the other girls. Meanwhile, Marietta begins to realize that she might have feelings for Warrington, but is unsure if he feels the same way. As they work together to try and solve the pirate problem, they both start to realize that their feelings for each other are more than just friendship.
As the story progresses, Marietta and Warrington's relationship faces many challenges as they both deal with their own personal demons. However, their love for each other continues to grow and becomes the driving force behind their actions.
Along with the strong performances from MacDonald and Eddy, the film also features a standout performance from Frank Morgan, who plays the role of Governor de Rochelle. The film's standout musical number is the iconic "Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life" duet between MacDonald and Eddy, which has gone on to become one of the most memorable movie musical moments of all time.
Naughty Marietta is a classic tale of love and adventure set against the backdrop of 18th century New Orleans. With its timeless story, memorable performances, and delightful musical numbers, the film has rightfully earned its place in the annals of movie musical history.
