Narcopolis is a 2015 film that takes place in a dystopian society in the future where addiction is no longer a prohibited thing, but rather, the norm. The film takes place in a society where the state controls the drug supply, and the general public remains under the same spell of synthetic high, which brings them to a world of total bliss.

The movie follows Frank Grieves, a Detective in the city who investigates drug-related crimes. Narcopolis opens with Frank investigating a suspicious death. In this dystopian society, the drug of choice is "Narcotic 8" or "N8," a highly addictive drug that affects individuals with a prolonged state of euphoria.
While investigating the crime scene, Frank finds a small vial containing a new drug that is more potent than N8. Frank sets to discover where the drug is coming from and ends up stumbling upon a dangerous conspiracy that could end up costing him his life.

While Frank is investigating the new drug, he meets a conspiracy theorist, who believes that the drug is being distributed to keep the population pacified and complacent deliberately. In support of this theory, Frank discovers that the government is hiding a lot of information from him, and he teams up with the attractive Dr. Nash, who is working on a cure for drug addiction. Nash is convinced that drug addiction is a curable disease rather than a hopeless condition, and she may hold the key to the whole conspiracy. As Frank gets closer to uncovering the truth, he becomes targeted by powerful people who will stop at nothing to keep him quiet.

The film explores themes of addiction, government control over our lives, and the extent to which people will go to maintain power. The drug is a metaphor for how people in modern society are being controlled by those in power. It shows how people are creating a vacuum for themselves, and this vacuum has left them desperate for a way to avoid the pain and suffering of reality.

The film's story starts slowly, but as it progresses, it picks up pace with action sequences, chases, interrogations, and drug-fueled hallucinations, culminating in an explosive finale. Narcopolis's visual style is claustrophobic, with tight shots of Frank's face, emphasizing his sense of entrapment within the conspiracy that surrounds him. Everything is dark, drab, and polluted—- a vision of a future where hope is a distant memory.

The film is filled with strong performances from the cast. James Callis is excellent as Frank Grieves, the detective who is stuck between his moral duty and personal ambition. His character is complex, and he manages to portray both the cynical and the optimistic aspects of the character convincingly.

Kerry Shale and Harry Lloyd are also great as the supporting cast. Shale portrays Mickey Pearson, a drug lord who is responsible for distributing the new drug. He is cold, calculating, and ruthless, always maintaining his composure even in the most trying of circumstances. Lloyd plays Dex, Frank's partner in the police force. He brings a sense of nervous energy to the character, always on edge and desperate not to disappoint Frank.

Overall, Narcopolis is a dark, thought-provoking film that is well worth watching. It is ambitious, exploring complex themes such as addiction, government control, and the power that comes with the creation of a drug-induced Utopia. The film's stunning visuals and strong performances make it an unforgettable and haunting watch.

Narcopolis is a 2015 thriller with a runtime of 1 hour and 36 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.4 and a MetaScore of 30.
