Charlton Heston stars as Lee Cahill, a safari guide whose well-heeled clientele now just take pictures of big game, in this beautifully produced drama filmed entirely on location in Kenya. Young, brooding Rick Cahill (John Savage) a former Green Beret who now works for the Kenyan government apprehending wildlife poachers, wants nothing to do with his father, Lee, who divorced his mother years before. But Rick seems to cross paths with his father every time he turns around. To make matters worse, beautiful Annie Malone (Maud Adams), the former girlfriend Rick can't get over, is now dating his father, and Rick can see that she is much more serious about Lee than she ever was about him. In pursuit of a pair of particularly vicious poachers, Rick finds himself stranded in the vicinity of his father's camp. Alone against the poachers, Rick is in a bit over his head. Annie, realizing Rick needs backing up, prods Lee to accompany him--something neither man wants--as Rick closes in on the traffickers. This forceful drama builds to its suspenseful climax as the estranged father and son set out together into the bush in pursuit of the dangerous poachers. Clashing at every turn but forced to work together, the two men grudgingly realize they have much in common, not least of which is a love and respect for the wildlife of Africa. When finally the fateful encounter occurs, only one of the men lives to be thankful that they made their peace in time.
