Mystery Science Theater 3000: Horrors of Spider Island is a classic comedy film released in 1996 that follows a group of scientists stranded on a deserted island after their plane crashes. The 1960's German film dubbed in English focuses on a group of dancers and production crew headed to Singapore for a show when their plane crashes and they wash up on a creepy island inhabited by giant spiders.
The main feature of the film, and what makes it so enjoyable, is the cast's hilarious commentary during the screening of the film. Kevin Murphy, Michael J. Nelson, and Mary Jo Pehl play the roles of Mike Nelson, Crow T. Robot, and Pearl Forrester, respectively. They're all hilarious, bouncing quips off one another and mocking the absurdities and clichés of B-movies and horror flicks.
The movie begins as a group of burlesque dancers are rehearsing for a show in Singapore. One of the dancers' boyfriends, Gary, is their manager and chaperone. The group hitches a ride on a private plane, which crashes on a deserted island while flying through a storm. The survivors include the dancers, Gary, and two pilots.
After some initial confusion, the group discovers that the island is infested with giant spiders. While trying to survive, the group stumbles upon a scientist named Professor von Krantz, who has been living on the island for a decade while experimenting with spider venom. The Professor's experiments have led to him transforming into a spider-human hybrid, complete with a thirst for blood and a penchant for attacking bikini-clad women.
The commentary from the cast is a perfect example of their ability to create humor from terrible movies. They make fun of the terrible acting, the poorly written script, the shoddy special effects, and the nonsensical plot. It's hard not to laugh along with them as they poke fun at the on-screen action.
Overall, Mystery Science Theater 3000: Horrors of Spider Island is an entertaining and hilarious movie that is well worth watching. The cast's commentary adds some much-needed levity to a film that would otherwise be painful to watch. If you're a fan of B-movies, horror flicks, or just good old-fashioned humor, then you'll definitely enjoy this film.
