My Village People is a 2021 Nigerian comedy movie that revolves around a young man named Zubby, who is living a comfortable life in Lagos, making money and dating an attractive woman named Boma. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when he starts experiencing strange incidents, and everything around him threatens to fall apart.
The movie stars Venita Akpofure as Boma, Amaechi Muonagor as Pa John, and Nkem Owoh as Chief Obi. It was directed by Niyi Akinmolayan and produced by NdaniTV, the streaming arm of Nigerian media company, EbonyLife.
The movie opens with Zubby narrating his story, detailing how he started noticing unusual things happening around him. He wakes up one day with two big horns on his head, which he initially hides with a hat. However, the horns grow bigger and become impossible to conceal, causing him to become a laughingstock in the area.
As the story progresses, Zubby discovers that his problems are caused by his village people, who are angered by his refusal to visit their village and pay homage to them. According to African mythology and folklore, the village people are supernatural entities who oversee and protect the affairs of individuals' villages. They can bring blessings or curses depending on how they are treated.
Zubby's village people are malicious and manipulative, and only seek to harm him. In one scene, he's mysteriously turned into a goat, and in another, he becomes a woman. The plot twists are numerous, making the movie unpredictable and engaging.
One of the highlights of the movie is the comedic performances of the cast. Nkem Owoh, who's known for his impeccable portrayal of comedic characters, is hilarious as the imposing and wealthy Chief Obi. Amaechi Muonagor also performs excellently as Pa John, the town cryer who constantly reminds Zubby of his ancestral obligations. Venita Akpofure equally delivers an incredible performance as Boma, Zubby's girlfriend, who provides a calming and romantic balance to the movie's supernatural twist.
Apart from the comedy, My Village People also includes a social commentary on the importance of cultural heritage and traditions. Zubby's journey of rediscovering his roots is an indicator of the disconnect and indifference many young people have towards their culture and traditions.
The movie's cinematography and production design are also noteworthy, with vivid and colorful scenes that showcase the beauty of the Nigerian culture and lifestyle. Furthermore, the soundtrack is an excellent accompaniment, with hits from popular musicians such as Patoranking and Ric Hassani.
In conclusion, My Village People is a captivating and hilarious movie that offers an entertaining insight into African mythology and folklore. The cast, led by Nkem Owoh, Amaechi Muonagor, and Venita Akpofure, delivers a spectacular performance that'll keep audiences glued to their screens.
