My Life as a Dog is a Swedish film based on the novel, Mit Liv Som Hund, by Reidar Jonsson. The movie was released in the year of 1985 and holds a running time of 101 minutes. Directed by Lasse Hallstrom, the plot of the movie takes place in Sweden between the years of 1958-1959. Ingemar is a 12 year-old boy that gets into trouble quite often and doesn't get along well with his brother. His brother constantly makes fun of him, playing practical jokes on him as well. Their terminally ill mother finds it difficult to look after both Ingemar and his brother. Thus, in order to allow the mother to rest as needed, the two brothers are separated and sent off to live with their relatives. Ingemar is sent to live with his uncle, Gunnar, who lives in a tiny town along with his wife.
The town, in spite of its small size, is filled with eccentric characters that Ingemar makes acquaintances with throughout the story. One of the characters named Saga is a tomboy that takes a liking to Ingemar and shows this through peculiar measures. Fransson is a man that continuously fixes his roof and Mr. Arvidsson is an old man that takes a liking to lingerie catalogs. With time, Ingemar begins to form a bond with his uncle too. However, as the story progresses, Ingemar keeps telling himself that his circumstances could have been much worse despite the events that occur later on. As he repeatedly tells himself this, he compares the events to situations that were much worse in his vision, such as the dog that was sent out to space but died when her food supply ran out. In this film, Anton Glanzelius stars as Ingemar, Tomas von Brömsen stars as Uncle Gunnar, and Anki Lidén stars as Ingemar's mother.
My Life as a Dog is a 1985 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 41 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.6 and a MetaScore of 82.
