In the early 19th century in Cornwall, England, Philip Ashley (Richard Burton) grew up on a remote estate with his cousin Ambrose, who is like a father to him. When Ambrose leaves for Italy to improve his health, Philip receives a worrying letter from him, claiming that he is being poisoned by his wife, Rachel. However, before Philip can go to Italy to help his cousin, Ambrose passes away.

Soon after, Rachel (Olivia de Havilland) arrives in Cornwall, and Philip becomes obsessed with her. He is hesitant to trust her, believing that she murdered Ambrose, but soon becomes entranced by her charming ways. As he spends more time with Rachel, Philip's love for her becomes all-consuming, and he begins to question his own suspicions about her.

As Philip falls deeper in love with Rachel, he starts to believe that she is innocent and that Ambrose's death may have been due to natural causes. Rachel's behavior, however, is still shrouded in mystery, and Philip's godfather and guardian, Nick Kendall (Ronald Squire), warns him about falling too deeply for her.

The plot of My Cousin Rachel revolves around Philip's obsession with Rachel and his attempts to untangle the mystery surrounding her behavior. Is she a cunning murderess, or is she simply misunderstood? The film is a psychological drama that explores themes of obsession, suspicion, and desire, and the complex relationships that can develop between people.
