Mutant, also known as Night Shadows, is a cult classic horror movie from 1984 directed by John Bud Cardos. The movie is set in a small town in Georgia, where two brothers, Josh (Wings Hauser) and Mike (Lee Montgomery), stop to visit their old friend, Joe (Bo Hopkins). As they arrive in town, strange things start to happen. A series of gruesome murders take place, and the townspeople are convinced that it's the work of a wild animal. However, Josh and Mike suspect that there's something much more sinister going on.
Through their investigation, they discover that the local chemical plant is dumping toxic waste into the nearby swamps, which has caused genetic mutations in the wildlife. As a result, a group of humanoid creatures has emerged from the swamps, and they are hungry for human flesh.
The brothers team up with Joe and his girlfriend, Holly (Jody Medford), to fight off the mutants and protect the town. They use their wits and some improvised weapons to take on the creatures, but it's a race against time as the mutants grow stronger and more aggressive with each passing day.
The movie features some intense and graphic scenes, particularly during the mutants' attacks on their human victims. There's also an underlying sense of paranoia and distrust among the townspeople as they struggle to come to grips with the threat that's facing them.
The performances of the main cast are solid, particularly Wings Hauser as the grizzled, no-nonsense Josh. He brings a real sense of urgency and toughness to his role, making him a believable hero in the face of such a terrifying situation. Bo Hopkins also delivers a solid performance as Joe, the local cop who initially dismisses the brothers' claims but eventually comes to believe in their theory.
Jody Medford's character, Holly, is unfortunately given little to do beyond being a love interest and damsel in distress. However, she does have a few moments of agency, particularly in the movie's climactic battle against the mutants.
One of the movie's standout features is its practical effects work, which brings the mutants to life in a truly terrifying way. The creatures are horrifically mutated, with twisted limbs and gnarled features that make them a formidable foe for the human characters.
Overall, Mutant is a fun and fast-paced horror movie that's well worth checking out for fans of the genre. It's not a particularly deep or nuanced film, but it delivers plenty of thrills and scares, and its memorable monsters have earned it a place in the pantheon of '80s horror classics.
