In Muscle Beach Party, directed by William Asher, Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello star as a love-struck couple who head out to Muscle Beach to spend their summer days in the sunshine with their friends. Surfing is the key activity, but when the opportunity arises to take part in a bodybuilding competition, the gang quickly jumps at the chance.

It all starts when Frankie and Dee Dee (Annette) realize they've been so busy with their school work and other things that they haven't really enjoyed each other's company in a while. They decide to take a break from their ordinary days and go to Muscle Beach where they can relax, soak up some rays and have a lot of fun.

When they arrive, they discover that there are a lot of different things to do besides surfing such as horseback riding and volleyball. However, they also notice a group of bodybuilders who are getting ready for an upcoming competition. As they explore the area, Frankie and Dee Dee meet a wealthy Italian countess (played by Luciana Paluzzi) who happens to be a bodybuilder. Things start to get interesting in the love triangle department when she sets her sights on Frankie, causing tensions to rise within the group.

As the days go by, the group prepares for the bodybuilding competition. Meanwhile, Dee Dee is jealous of the countess and concerned that she will steal Frankie away from her. She starts to focus more on becoming a bodybuilder herself in order to keep Frankie's attention on her. The bodybuilding competition becomes the central event of the movie, with each of the characters having their own reasons for wanting to participate.

The movie is a lighthearted, fun-filled romp that has less to do with plot and more to do with the antics of the colorful cast of characters. The characters are all archetypes; Frankie is the all-American, good-natured jock, Dee Dee is the wholesome, girl-next-door type, and the countess is the sultry, exotic foreigner. They are all exaggerated and over-the-top, but that is part of the charm of the film.

The surfing scenes are thrilling and the beach life is idyllic, representing a time and place that many people in the 1960s longed for. The movie is definitely a product of its time; the cultural references and attitudes are very much of the early 1960s, and it is interesting to see how ideals and values have changed since then. It is also a snapshot of a time when the bodybuilding craze was in its infancy and soon to become a global phenomena.

Muscle Beach Party is a great example of the beach party genre that was popular in the 1960s. It is a movie that doesn't take itself too seriously and is meant to be enjoyed for its comedic moments and catchy musical numbers. The beach setting is a perfect backdrop for the light-hearted story, the talented cast of actors and actresses, and the unforgettable soundtrack.

Muscle Beach Party is a 1964 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 34 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.1.
