Muoi: The Legend of a Portrait is a 2007 South Korean-Vietnamese horror film directed by Tae-kyeong Kim, who has previously worked as an assistant director to prominent directors including Park Chan-wook and Kim Jee-woon. The film is based on a Vietnamese ghost story and centers around the myth of Muoi, a vengeful female ghost who is summoned by a portrait.

The story follows Yoon-hee, a Korean writer who is struggling to find inspiration for her next novel. Her friend, Seo-yeon, suggests that she travel to Vietnam and meet with her acquaintance, a local journalist named Nam. Nam introduces Yoon-hee to a spooky local legend of a famous painter, who created a portrait of a beautiful woman named Muoi. The woman, along with the portrait, eventually disappears and is rumored to have committed suicide due to her forbidden love for the painter. The legend goes on to say that anyone who tries to recreate the portrait will unleash the wrath of Muoi, who will come back to exact her revenge.

Yoon-hee is intrigued by the story and decides to base her novel on it. To get inspiration, she decides to visit the house of the painter, which is said to be haunted by Muoi's ghost. Things take a turn for the worse when Yoon-hee's friend Seo-yeon arrives in Vietnam and starts to recreate the portrait of Muoi. This unleashes the vengeful ghost, who starts to wreak havoc on the people who are involved with the portrait.

As the film progresses, the story gets increasingly suspenseful as Yoon-hee begins to experience strange occurrences and nightmares. She becomes deeply entangled with the myth of Muoi and the story ends up revealing more about her relationship with Seo-yeon, who seems to be hiding a dark secret.

The film has a unique combination of horror, drama, and mystery, and explores themes such as the supernatural, artistic creativity, forbidden love, and female empowerment. The acting performances by Ye-ryeon Cha, So-hee Hong, and Hong-Anh are all commendable and help to drive the plot forward. The film is impressively shot and the production design and costumes showcase the beauty of Vietnamese culture.

One of the standout elements of Muoi: The Legend of a Portrait is the way in which it uses sound to create a haunting atmosphere. The eerie, atmospheric music played throughout the film adds to the tension and spookiness of the story. The use of different languages, including Korean and Vietnamese, also adds to the cultural richness of the film.

Overall, Munoi: The Legend of a Portrait is an excellent horror film that provides a refreshing take on the genre. Director Tae-kyung Kim skillfully interweaves different elements to create an engaging and suspenseful storyline, which is elevated by the performances of the actors and the stunning production design. The film's exploration of universal themes such as love, passion, and revenge makes it appealing to audiences from any culture.
