Munchie is a comedy film from 1992 directed by Jim Wynorski and produced by Roger Corman. The film stars Loni Anderson, Andrew Stevens, and Jamie McEnnan in leading roles. The storyline revolves around the mischievous Munchie, a magical creature who gets into trouble with the law after causing chaos in the lives of two estranged couples.
The movie opens with a glimpse of the mystical powers of Munchie, a cute furry creature with a mischievous sense of humor. Munchie can grant wishes and seems to enjoy doing so for those who invite him into their lives. The story then moves to the lives of the two estranged couples - the boy-crazy mother Andrea (Loni Anderson) and her teenage daughter Wendy, and the businessman Simon (Andrew Stevens) and his son Chris. They live in the same neighborhood but are polar opposites in personality.
Just as Andrea is about to win the 'Woman of the Year' award, her daughter Wendy invites Munchie into their lives. Munchie quickly becomes Wendy's guardian angel and assists her in dealing with school bullies and other teenage problems. However, Munchie's mischievousness causes chaos in Andrea's life, making her question her sanity. Wendyâs new friend causes her mother to lose her job and gets her arrested, creating some hilarious moments.
Meanwhile, Chris' wish to win the basketball game comes true with the help of Munchie, who acts as a lucky charm for the team. Simon is impressed with his son's performance and assigns him the task of spying on his competitor. As Chris begins to uncover his competitor's dirty tricks, he inadvertently attracts the attention of a gang of thieves who think Chris is onto them.
Munchie, who loves fast food, repeatedly gets the group into trouble during the course of the movie, but also comes in handy at critical moments, using his magical powers to thwart the bad guys. As events unfold, the families become united in their struggle to get Munchie out of the grasp of the thieves and into the safety of their own homes.
The movie's overall impression of Munchie is that of an omnipresent entity - always watching, always meddling, always scheming. The film has some genuinely funny moments, thanks mostly to Munchie's presence, and the special effects are surprisingly good for a low-budget production. Loni Anderson gives a standout performance as the hapless mother, struggling to keep her head above water, thanks to Munchie's unintended consequences.
Overall, Munchie is a lighthearted family comedy that offers some laughs and pleasant characters, while also delivering a wholesome message about the importance of family and the power of love. It may not be the most original movie ever made, but it has a certain charm and appeal that will make viewers smile by the time the credits roll.
Munchie is a 1992 kids & family movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 18 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 3.5.
