The Mummy was released in 1999 and presents a new story angle to the time tested tale. The majority of the film is set in 1923 Egypt with two archaeology teams vying for the same ancient prize. The opening scenes of The Mummy take place in ancient Egypt with the character Imhotep, who is caught having an affair with the pharaoh's beautiful mistress, Anck Su Namun. The punishment for the crime is to be mummified and buried alive along with a bucket of flesh eating scarab beetles. Meanwhile, his lover cannot cope with his horrible fate and she kills herself with a dagger. Moments before being nabbed by the palace guards, the two had made a pact to return to the land of the living some day and rekindle their love for one another.
The Mummy timeline then fast forwards to early 1920's Egypt. An intellectual English librarian named Evie saves a wise-cracking American Rick O'Connell from a public hanging on the gallows in Cairo. The pair will soon team with a handful of archaeologists to investigate the fate of Imhotep. Armed with secret incantations and a priceless copy of The Book of the Dead, the archaeology team will soon unearth a variety of supernatural creatures that band together to stop the team from completing their work.
The Mummy stars Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Oded Fehr, Patricia Velasquez, and Arnold Vosloo in the title role. The Mummy is rated PG-13 for some violence in the battle scenes. However, the necessary violence is depicted with computer graphics that create engaging characters from militant skeleton armies to gigantic mummy images bursting forth from the desert sands. The tone of The Mummy is light and the script is full of comedy one-liners making this film appropriate for most audiences. The Mummy was written and directed by Stephen Sommers and has a running time of 125 minutes.
