Mulk is a 2018 Bollywood drama movie directed by Anubhav Sinha and starring Taapsee Pannu, Neena Gupta, and Ashutosh Rana in the lead roles. The movie is a heartwarming and emotional tale of a Muslim family and their struggle to prove their patriotism and loyalty towards their country when one of their own is accused of being a terrorist.
The movie starts with a happy family gathering at the house of Murad Ali Mohammed (Rishi Kapoor), a respected Muslim lawyer in the town. The family comprises his wife, daughter-in-law, son, and grandchildren. All of them are leading a happy and peaceful life until one day, their nephew Shahid (Prateik Babbar), who had left the town years ago, returns one day as a terrorist and attacks a prominent Hindu temple in the nearby town.
Before anyone can realize what has happened, Shahid is shot dead by the police, and the entire Muslim community is under suspicion. The government, media, and the Hindu community collectively build up an atmosphere of hostility towards Muslims, branding them as terrorists and supporters of terrorism.
The police and the intelligence agencies start investigating the family, and Murad Ali's son Bilal (Manoj Pahwa) is put in jail, accused of being an accomplice in the terror attack. The family faces discrimination, social ostracism, and physical violence from their neighbors and society, who judge them based on their religion and not their actions.
The family decides to fight back against the system and clear their names. Fueled by the determination and dedication of Murad Ali and his daughter-in-law Aarti (Taapsee Pannu), a strong-minded Hindu woman who has married into the Muslim family, they start the long journey of fighting a legal battle and proving their innocence.
The movie explores themes of religion, nationalism, and patriotism, depicting how these values can easily be misused and manipulated for selfish gains. It portrays the trauma and pain that innocent Muslims face in their everyday lives, living in fear and distrust of their own countrymen.
The performances of the actors are a strong point of the movie. Rishi Kapoor as the patriarch of the family delivers an outstanding performance, portraying the helplessness and frustration of a man who has always stood for his country but is now fighting to prove his own loyalty towards it. Taapsee Pannu, as Aarti, is fierce and determined, showing that love and belongingness for a family can transcend all boundaries of religion and culture.
The movie also sheds light on the need for unity, compassion, and humanity. It imparts the message that we should judge people based on their actions, not their religion or nationality.
The direction of Anubhav Sinha is commendable as he handles a sensitive topic with a lot of finesse, giving the audience a glimpse into the lives of innocent Muslim families who face discrimination and prejudice every day, just for being Muslims.
In conclusion, Mulk is an emotional and thought-provoking movie that urges the audience to question their beliefs, values, and prejudices. It is a must-watch for everyone who wants to understand and empathize with the sufferings of innocent Muslims in India.
