Mulholland Falls is a 1996 movie, directed by Lee Tamahori, which tells the story of a group of elite police officers, The Hat Squad, who investigate and try to solve the murder of a young woman whose body is found in a deserted area. The movie takes place in Los Angeles, 1950, a time when the city was buzzing with glamour and excitement, but also with corruption and organized crime. Led by their captain, Max Hoover (Nick Nolte), The Hat Squad is a group of four tough and brutal detectives, known for their ruthless methods when it comes to getting the job done. They are Lt. Ellery Coolidge (Chazz Palminteri), Eddie Hall (Michael Madsen) and Arthur Relyea (Chris Penn). Together, they are known for delivering results in a city where few can be trusted.
As the movie begins, the detectives discover the body of a young woman, who has been brutally murdered and left in a remote area of the city. The victim's identity is quickly revealed to be a woman with whom Hoover had a brief relationship.
As the team investigates the death, they discover that the woman had close ties to a famous Hollywood producer, played by John Malkovich, and his actress girlfriend, played by Jennifer Connelly. As the investigation continues, the detectives uncover a complicated web of lies and deceit that puts their own lives at risk.
In addition to the investigation, Hoover deals with his own personal struggles, including a difficult relationship with his wife, Katherine (Melanie Griffith).
