In 1997, MST3K: Time Chasers was released, starring Kevin Murphy, Michael J. Nelson, and Mary Jo Pehl, and directed by David Giancola. The film is a sci-fi time-travel adventure about a man named Nick Miller who invents a time machine using a small aircraft that he's been constructing in his small Vermont town. Nick initially intends to use his time machine to make a few extra bucks by using his knowledge of future events to place bets on the outcome of sports games. However, when a wealthy businessman, J.K. Robertson, catches wind of his invention, he offers to buy the time machine for millions of dollars.
Fearful of his invention falling into the wrong hands, Nick refuses the offer and takes off in the aircraft, followed closely by Robertson and his goons. As he travels through time, Nick encounters various historical figures and events, but ultimately realizes that he must return to his own time to prevent Robertson from using the time machine for his own nefarious purposes.
As with all MST3K films, the plot of Time Chasers is merely a backdrop for the hilarious commentary provided by the show's regulars. The film's cheesy special effects, wooden acting, and convoluted plot all become fodder for the crew's jokes, as they poke fun at everything from Nick's mullet to the film's low-budget CGI.
However, despite the film's many flaws, it's clear that the cast and crew put a lot of love into the making of Time Chasers. Director David Giancola has even stated that he was honored to have his film riffed on in an episode of MST3K, which he claims helped to increase its cult following.
Overall, MST3K: Time Chasers is a fun and entertaining sci-fi romp that's perfect for fans of the show. While it may not be a great film on its own, the commentary provided by the MST3K crew elevates it to something truly enjoyable.
