MST3K - Space Mutiny is a classic sci-fi satire film that leaves audiences in stitches. The film follows a rogue space station as it hurtles through space promoting an anti-mutiny agenda. Manned by a hapless crew who seems to have taken life lessons from the Three Stooges, the film takes an all-out approach to humor, piling farce upon farce.
At times, the on-screen action is so ridiculous that it defies explanation. Thankfully, viewers can lean back in their chairs and take in the movie with the help of the seriesâ signature riffing style. A humorous commentary track consisting of zingers, one-liners, and inside jokes is slapped on top of the film to make it infinitely more enjoyable.
The movie features some great comedic talents, with highlights in each performance. Bill Corbett, Michael J. Nelson, and Kevin Murphy steal the show with their hilarious antics. The chemistry between the commentary team is excellent, and they all seem to be having a blast, which translates into some genuinely fun moments.
The production values of Space Mutiny leave much to be desired. The filmâs low budget became apparent in some of the sets and special effects; the space ship interiors look like they were made out of cardboard and spray paint. The spaceship models are made using anything at the production teamâs disposal, fitting everything from X-wing style ships to models that are loosely based on the cargo haulers in Aliens.
The visual effects are not the only deficiency â the acting is also a standout. Performances from the cast are over-the-top and verging on amateurish. Many of the performances done by the actors are not subtle, as one might expect in a serious film. Nonetheless, this is all part of the comedic premise, so viewers will be able to laugh at how bad the movie is.
The dialogue in Space Mutiny is filled with techno-babble that doesn't necessarily make sense, which only adds to the humor. However, viewers can sit back and watch with amusement at how ridiculous it all is. Overall, the movie works better as a comedy than a sci-fi adventure.
The in-film musical score is unintentionally hilarious. The synth-heavy tracks sound like they're from a low-budget soap opera, adding to the filmâs overall charm. Meanwhile, an uncredited vocal song blares over the end credits, delivering a sweeping ballad describing the heroics of our lead characters.
The filmâs costume design is outstanding in their mediocrity. The crewâs uniforms are seemingly from a 1980s aerobics video, making it difficult not to laugh. Meanwhile, the movieâs titular Space Mutiny soldiers wear plastic helmets reminiscent of late medieval armor â itâs all rather baffling.
The film's production is not without its strengths. Cinematographer Jacques Haitkin creates a sense of epic scale with every shot. He uses wide, top-down angles to capture the spaceship in its surroundings amid a black void of space, giving the movie a proper sense of scale. Although the visual effects aren't great, Haitkin frames the CGI sequences in a way that makes the low-budget effects at least seem a little more impressive.
The overall message of Space Mutiny is that rebellion is a bad thing. However, the movie is upended so much by the commentary that any attempt at a serious tone is lost in translation. The MST3K gang is more than up to the challenge of satirizing this hilariously bad film.
In conclusion, MST3K - Space Mutiny is a must-watch for lovers of classic, low-budget, and funny films. The commentary team's ribald dialogue, performance, and humor bring a tin-plated sci-fi action adventure film an unexpected dose of curative humor. Although the film itself may be taken slightly seriously, thanks to the MST3K team, it doesn't have to be.
MST3K - Space Mutiny is a comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 32 minutes.
