Moonlight Mile is a 2002 drama film directed by Brad Silberling, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, and Susan Sarandon. The film tells the story of a young man named Joe Nast (Gyllenhaal) who is dealing with the death of his fiancée Diana Floss (Mastrantonio) as he navigates his way through the grieving process and learns to move on with his life.

The film is set in the late 1970s in the fictional town of Cape Ann, Massachusetts, where Joe has been living with Diana's parents Ben and Jojo Floss (Hoffman and Sarandon) since the funeral. They've been helping him deal with Diana's death, giving him a place to stay and treating him like their own son. Joe is grateful for their support, but as time goes on he starts to feel like he's overstayed his welcome.

While living with the Flosses, Joe befriends a local girl named Bertie Knox (Ellen Pompeo) who works as a bartender at a nearby bar. She's about the same age as Joe and the two of them start to develop a close relationship. Bertie is one of the few people who understands what Joe is going through, having lost her own mother when she was younger.

As Joe continues to try and move on with his life, he starts to feel like he's betraying Diana's memory. He struggles with the idea of starting a new relationship, even though he's clearly drawn to Bertie. Meanwhile, Ben and Jojo are dealing with their own grief and frustration at the legal system as they try to get justice for their daughter's death. They've been pushing for the trial of Diana's accused killer to start, but the process keeps getting delayed.

The film has a strong emotional core, with excellent performances from the leads. Gyllenhaal is particularly good as the anguished Joe, conveying the character's pain and confusion with ease. Hoffman and Sarandon are both excellent as the grieving Flosses, with Hoffman in particular delivering some standout scenes. The film also features an excellent supporting cast, including Pompeo, Mastrantonio, and Holly Hunter in a small but memorable role.

Moonlight Mile is a poignant and heartfelt drama that examines the ways in which people deal with grief and loss. It's a well-crafted film that doesn't rely on cheap sentimentality to tug at the heartstrings. Instead, it allows the characters and their relationships to drive the narrative, resulting in a movie that feels authentic and honest.

Overall, Moonlight Mile is an excellent film that's well worth seeing for anyone who enjoys character-driven drama. It's a touching and sincere exploration of the human condition, featuring some great performances and a strong emotional core. Highly recommended.
