Mood Indigo is a film that centres on Coline and Chloe, a Parisian couple whose love is vibrant and imaginative, but whose time together begins to dwindle. Audrey Tautou plays Chloe, a young woman whose passion for music and art is contagious. Romain Duris plays Colin, a wealthy man who spends his days inventing peculiar gadgets and inflicting them on his friends.

Their romance is both blissful and surreal, with a world that seems to exist beyond the laws of physics. Flowers bloom out of thin air, pianos play by themselves, and the walls of Chloe's apartment rise and fall like a rising tide.

But a sinister malady threatens their joyous existence. Chloe manifests a rare, overpowering illness that can only be cured by a medicinal flower, a rare and costly remedy. Desperate to save her, Colin exhausts his money, invents bizarre medical contraptions and climbs to ridiculous, life-threatening heights to obtain the precious cure.

The film's tone is whimsical and childlike, yet it also grips the heart with a sense of foreboding. The director, Michel Gondry, guides the story through a surreal landscape with a manic energy, using stop motion and other visual tricks to create a dreamlike reality.

The movie manages to evoke both laughter and tears, weaving a tale of innocence and peril in a vibrant, candy-coloured world that feels both familiar and otherworldly.

While the film's plot is constructed around a relatively simple story, its execution is anything but. Mood Indigo is alive with surreal flourishes and hidden meanings. It’s a story that embraces the positives and the negatives of life and unpacks the endearing nature of love, life, art and music.

The performances of the lead actors are outstanding. Audrey Tautou, as always, is luminous portraying her role with depth, intelligence, and a sense of the fantastical. Romain Duris and Gad Elmaleh, who plays Colin's best friend Chick, both shine in their roles, bringing a wealth of humour and humanity beneath the surface.

The soundtrack plays a key role in the film, with Chloe's love of music triggering the fantastical sights and sounds that inhabit her world. As she falls ill, the music becomes more and more haunting and lingers in the mind long after the credits have rolled.

Mood Indigo is a whimsical, dreamlike pleasure that tells a worthwhile story that keeps viewers captivated throughout. The film is a feast for the eyes, with every scene bursting with brightly coloured and often bizarre images. It's a reminder of the power of love and the importance of imagination, an ode to the beauty of the world and the importance of cherishing all that we hold dear.

Overall, Mood Indigo is a charming, offbeat, and surreal love story that is certain to bewitch and enchant those who choose to spend their time with it.
