Mohawk is a historical horror-thriller movie that was released in 2017. It is directed by Ted Geoghegan and tells the story of Mohawk tribe member and a young couple who are caught up in the midst of war between the Americans and the British during the War of 1812. The movie begins with a short narration about the history of the Mohawk tribe and their involvement in the War of 1812. We meet Oak (Kaniehtiio Horn), a Mohawk tribe member, and her two companions, Calvin Two Rivers (Justin Rain), and her partner, a British renegade named Joshua Pinsmail (Eamon Farren). They are on the run from the Americans after ambushing their camp and killing a group of soldiers in revenge for the destruction of their village. During their journey, they come across a young couple, Anna (Chelsea Ricketts), and her fiancé, a tracker and frontiersman named Calvin Hollister (Jon Huber AKA Luke Harper). Though both parties are initially wary of each other, they eventually team up to fight off both the Americans and the British who are pursuing them.
The movie explores many themes, including loyalty, revenge, and the effects of war on individuals and communities. Oak's character, in particular, is a moving and complex portrayal of a young woman caught between two worlds - her loyalty to her tribe and her desire to protect the man she loves. Kaniehtiio Horn gives a powerful performance as Oak, showcasing a range of emotions, from fierce determination to heart-wrenching vulnerability.
The cinematography and sound design in Mohawk are both impressive. While the movie is set during daylight, much of the action takes place in the dark, with only torches and moonlight illuminating the scenes. This creates an eerie and atmospheric setting that adds to the tension and suspense of the story. The sound design is equally impressive, with the sounds of nature and battle adding to the realism of the setting.
The movie's use of violence is not gratuitous, but it is impactful. The battles between the Americans and the British, as well as between the Mohawks and the other groups, are portrayed in a realistic and brutal manner that is not for the faint of heart. However, the movie is not overly gory and relies more on creating suspense than shock value.
One of the most interesting aspects of Mohawk is its examination of the role that myths and legends play in shaping a culture's identity. Throughout the movie, there are several references to Mohawk legends, including the story of the Windigo, a creature that is said to devour human flesh. While these legends are presented as a part of Mohawk culture, the movie suggests that they can be used to justify violence and cruelty.
Overall, Mohawk is a compelling movie that explores some weighty themes while delivering a thrilling and suspenseful story. The acting, cinematography, and sound design are all top-notch, and the movie's examination of culture and identity adds an extra layer of depth to the tale. If you're a fan of historical horror-thrillers or just looking for an intense and thought-provoking movie, Mohawk comes highly recommended.
