In the late 90s, there was a resurgence of interest in vampires, and Modern Vampires took the classic horror trope and gave it a modern twist. Directed by Richard Elfman and starring Casper Van Dien, Natasha Gregson Wagner, and Rod Steiger, the movie follows a group of vampires living in contemporary Los Angeles as they struggle to find a new way of life.
Van Dien plays Dallas, a young and handsome vampire who is tired of his existence. He's been alive for over 600 years and has grown tired of the constant cycle of blood and violence that comes with being a vampire. He longs for a normal life, but he knows that's impossible.
Enter Nico (Wagner), a young woman who wants to become a vampire. She's fascinated by their lifestyle and wants to join their ranks. Dallas sees something in her and decides to take her under his wing. Through Nico's eyes, we see the world of the vampires and the struggles they face to survive.
One of the unique things about Modern Vampires is the way it explores the mythology of vampires. Instead of just being mindless killers, the vampires in this movie are thinking beings. They have their own beliefs, traditions, and rules. They don't like killing humans, but they have to feed to survive. They also face new challenges in the modern world, like the increasing difficulty of finding human prey and the rise of new technologies that could threaten their existence.
The movie also has a strong comedic element. Rod Steiger plays Dr. Frederick Van Helsing, a descendant of the famous vampire hunter. Van Helsing is now a geriatric vampire hunter who uses a wheelchair and speaks in a thick German accent. He's a hilarious character and provides some of the biggest laughs in the movie.
As the vampires search for a new way of life, they also find themselves facing a new threat. A group of vampire hunters is hot on their trail, determined to destroy them. The hunters are led by a wealthy businessman named Ulric (Kim Cattrall), who has a personal vendetta against the vampires.
One of the standout scenes in the movie is a confrontation between the vampires and the hunters in a nightclub. The vampires are dancing and having a good time, but when the hunters arrive, things quickly turn violent. The scene is a perfect example of the movie's blend of horror and comedy.
Ultimately, the movie is about finding a way to change one's fate. Can the vampires leave their violent ways behind and find a new way of life, or are they doomed to their existence forever? Modern Vampires is a fun and unique take on the vampire genre that will appeal to horror fans and comedy fans alike.
