Mission Kashmir is a 2000 Indian action-thriller film directed and co-written by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The film is set in the beautiful valley of Kashmir, where two families are embroiled in a bitter feud that has resulted in the death of many lives. It stars Sanjay Dutt, Hrithik Roshan, and Preity G Zinta in important roles. Sanjay Dutt plays Inayat Khan, a top Indian police officer who tries to bring peace to the troubled valley of Kashmir. He is tasked with cracking down on a group of militants who are determined to separate Kashmir from India. Hrithik Roshan plays Altaaf, an orphan boy who was abandoned by his parents during the early days of the conflict. He is taken in by a militant group, led by a ruthless mastermind Hilal Kohistani, played by Jackie Shroff. Preity Zinta plays Sufiya, Inayat Khan's wife, who lost her own son during one of the militant attacks.
The film opens with a heart-wrenching scene of a young Altaaf witnessing the brutal killing of his parents by Indian soldiers. The incident leaves a deep impression on Altaaf and he vows to seek revenge against the Indian establishment. The story then moves forward by a few years, and we see a grown-up Altaaf (Hrithik Roshan) becoming a part of a militant group. They kidnap a prominent politician and threaten to kill him unless their demands for the independence of Kashmir are met.
Inayat Khan (Sanjay Dutt) is a hard-nosed police officer who has been tasked with finding and capturing the militants. He is under tremendous pressure to restore peace to the valley and to prove his own worth to the authorities. He is also dealing with his own personal tragedies, having lost his own son to militant violence.
One day, while on a mission, Inayat Khan stumbles upon Altaaf, who he immediately recognizes as the son of the couple he had killed many years ago. He takes Altaaf under his wing, hoping to turn him away from the path of violence. However, this sets off a chain of events that involves shootings, bombings and a bloody climax.
The film is action-packed, with stunning visuals of the valley in all its natural beauty. The story is intense and thought-provoking, exploring themes such as identity, loss, and redemption. The performances of the lead actors are top-notch, with Sanjay Dutt delivering a powerful performance as the tormented police officer, and Hrithik Roshan portraying the conflicted militant with great sincerity.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra's direction is tight and the use of captivating cinematography is brilliant. The songs in the film are melodious and complement the storyline, adding to the overall appeal of the film.
