In MI-5 (Spooks: The Greater Good), we follow ex-MI5 intelligence officer Will Holloway (played by Kit Harington) who's called back into service after a terrorist escapes custody and threatens to detonate a bomb in London. With the help of his former boss, Harry Pearce (played by Peter Firth), and a fellow officer, he races against time to uncover the truth behind the terrorist's plan and stop the attack before it's too late.
The movie is a spinoff of the popular British television series Spooks, which aired from 2002 to 2011. Fans of the show will recognize some familiar faces, including Firth, who played the head of MI5, and Jennifer Ehle, who played a recurring character.
The story begins with a tense prologue, where we see a terrorist named Adem Qasim (played by Elyes Gabel) escape from MI5 custody. We soon learn that Qasim has a vendetta against Harry Pearce, who was responsible for his capture in the first place. In his pursuit of revenge, Qasim teams up with other terrorists to plan an attack in London, and MI5 is powerless to stop them.
That's where Will Holloway comes in. He's a former MI5 officer who left the organization two years ago after a disagreement with Harry. As the only person who knows Qasim personally, he's the best hope MI5 has to track him down and stop the attack. But as Harry and Will delve deeper into the investigation, they begin to uncover a web of deceit and betrayal that threatens to destroy MI5 from within.
The movie is packed with action and suspense, as Harry and Will race against time to stop the terrorist plot. Kit Harington delivers a solid performance as Will, who's forced to confront his past and come to terms with his reasons for leaving MI5. Peter Firth is as reliable as ever in the role of Harry, whose calm exterior belies a storm of emotions roiling beneath. Jennifer Ehle, as always, is fantastic, playing a senior MI5 analyst with a keen mind and a sharp wit.
The supporting cast is also strong, with standout performances from Gabel as Qasim and Tim McInnerny as the scheming MI5 Deputy Director. The action scenes are well-done and thrilling, with a particularly tense sequence set on the London Underground.
But where the movie really shines is in its exploration of the moral complexities of spy work. Harry and Will are both grappling with the consequences of their actions, and the movie doesn't shy away from the fact that sometimes, in the service of protecting their country, intelligence agents must make difficult and sometimes unsavory choices.
Overall, MI-5 (Spooks: The Greater Good) is a strong thriller that will appeal to fans of the original Spooks series as well as newcomers. It's well-acted, tightly plotted, and delivers plenty of edge-of-your-seat action.
MI-5 is a 2015 thriller with a runtime of 1 hour and 44 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.2 and a MetaScore of 47.
