Mere Baap Pehle Aap is a 2008 Indian comedy-drama film directed by Priyadarshan and produced by Raman Maroo and Ganesh Jain. The film features an ensemble cast including Akshaye Khanna, Naseeruddin Shah, Paresh Rawal, Om Puri and Genelia D'Souza in lead roles. The movie revolves around Janaradhan Wishvanbhar Rane (Paresh Rawal), a widower who lives with his son and daughter-in-law. Janaradhan has retired as a school teacher but is still fond of teaching and is respected and loved by everyone in his neighborhood. After his wife's death, Janaradhan's only aim in life is to get his son, Avinash (Akshaye Khanna), married to a suitable girl.
Avinash is a successful businessman who has no time for love or marriage. He believes that marriage is a waste of time and that love is an illusion. Janaradhan doesn't want his son to be alone and decides to take up the responsibility of finding a perfect match for him. He appoints an astrologer to find a suitable bride for Avinash.
Meanwhile, Avinash gets a new secretary, Shikha (Genelia D'Souza), who is funny and vivacious. Although Avinash is initially irritated by her quirks, he starts falling for her. Shikha is unaware of Avinash's feelings and considers him just a boss. Avinash is hesitant to tell her how he really feels because he doesn't want to ruin their professional relationship.
Janaradhan and Avinash's life take a turn when Janaradhan's childhood friend Madhav (Naseeruddin Shah) and his daughter, Bhavana (Shobhana), come to stay with them. Madhav is a notorious womanizer and has been kicked out of his house by his wife. Bhavana is a modern, independent woman who takes a liking to Avinash. Janaradhan thinks that she would be the perfect match for Avinash and starts making plans for their wedding.
The story takes numerous twist and turns, along the way, adding to the comical elements in the movie. The film is a laugh riot as each character brings their own quirks to the story. A classic ensemble cast where every actor compliments one another, with their respective performances.
Mere Baap Pehle Aap perfectly balances sentiment, humor, and satire throughout the story. The director masterfully brings together the different subplots into a coherent narrative. The cinematography and soundtrack complement the movie's lighthearted and joyful feel, leaving a positive impact on the audience.
The film highlights the universal theme of the conflict between traditional values and modern beliefs. It showcases how the youth may perceive love and marriage compared to the older generation, but also shows how their respective approaches can find a common ground.
Mere Baap Pehle Aap has all the elements needed for a successful Bollywood film, a great story, well-executed script, and talented actors, making it an entertaining watch. The movie is considered to be one of the under-rated gems in Bollywood and definitely worth watching.
