Memdidi is a 1961 Indian movie about a family of four living in a small house in Kolkata. The movie is directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and stars Lalita Pawar, David Abraham, Tanuja Samarth, and Mehmood. The movie follows the lives of the Chatterjee family who are struggling to make ends meet. The father of the family, Shibnath (David Abraham), is a clerk who is unable to provide for his family due to his low salary. His wife, Protima (Lalita Pawar), is a strict and overbearing woman who constantly criticizes her husband and children.

Their daughter, Gopa (Tanuja Samarth), is a young girl who dreams of going to college but cannot due to their financial situation. Gopa is close to her uncle, Natabar (Mehmood), who is a struggling actor. Natabar is also in love with Gopa's friend, Shefali (Bela Bose).

One day, Natabar overhears a conversation between two men about a large sum of money hidden in their house. He tells Gopa about it, and they decide to steal the money to help their family. However, their plan backfires, and they are caught by the owners.

Amidst all this chaos, Protima falls ill, and the family struggles to pay for her medical expenses. Shibnath is unable to come up with the money, and Gopa is forced to take on odd jobs to help her mother. She eventually secures a loan from a moneylender, but the interest rate is so high that the family ends up in more debt than before.

Memdidi is a poignant portrayal of the struggles faced by a middle-class family in post-independence India. It highlights the importance of education and the ramifications of financial instability.

The performances in the movie are outstanding, particularly that of Lalita Pawar, who manages to convey a range of emotions despite her character's stern exterior. Mehmood provides much of the comic relief in the movie, but he also delivers a touching performance in his scenes with Tanuja Samarth.

The movie's soundtrack, composed by Hemant Kumar, is memorable and complements the story perfectly. The songs 'Tum Pukar Lo' and 'Yeh Dil Aur Unki Nigahon Ke Saaye' are still beloved by fans of Hindi cinema.

Overall, Memdidi is a must-watch for fans of Indian cinema. Its depiction of a struggling family trying to make ends meet is relatable even today, and its message about the importance of education is still relevant. Hrishikesh Mukherjee's direction, coupled with the brilliant performances by the cast, makes this movie a classic of Hindi cinema.
