Meg, a 2018 science fiction action thriller stars Jason Statham, Bingbing Li, and Rainn Wilson among others. Directed by Jon Turteltaub, the movie is based on the 1997 novel, Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten. It revolves around a deep-sea submersible exploring the Mariana Trench, and the discovery of a prehistoric, aquatic creature, the Megalodon.

The movie begins in the year 2008, where Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham), a deep-sea rescue diver, is part of a rescue mission to save some of his comrades. During this mission, Jonas claims to have encountered a massive creature, the existence of which his colleagues did not believe. However, in the present day, a billionaire named Jack Morris (Rainn Wilson) is funding a project to explore the depths of the Mariana Trench using his underwater research facility, Mana One. Jonas is brought in as a consultant but is reluctant to join the mission until he learns that his ex-wife, Lori (Jessica McNamee), is among the crew.

While exploring the deep sea, the crew of Mana One comes across a thermal layer that separates the cold and warm water in the trench. Beyond this layer, the crew encounters the Megalodon, a giant prehistoric shark believed to be extinct for millions of years. The crew are soon attacked by the creature, which damages their submersible and traps some of them at the bottom of the trench. The remainder of the movie follows the attempts of the survivors to escape from the trench and fight off the giant shark.

Meg is a typical action adventure movie with plenty of adrenaline-pumping moments. The story, based on a novel, is engaging and exciting. Jason Statham as Jonas Taylor delivers an excellent performance – he is rugged, tough and completely believable as an underwater rescue diver. Bingbing Li, who plays the role of Suyin, the daughter of the founder of Mana One, is mesmerising with her screen presence. Rainn Wilson, who is best known for his role as Dwight Schrute in The Office, plays the role of Jack Morris, the billionaire investor behind the Mana One project. Morris’ character is written to reflect the typical archetypal ‘greedy corporation’ stereotype, and Wilson does a decent job of portraying the character.

Jon Turteltaub’s direction is on point, keeping the pace of the movie brisk and maintaining the tension throughout the film. The underwater cinematography is terrific, and the shots of the Megalodon are particularly breathtaking. The special effects are top-notch and, combined with the high-quality sound effects, create an immersive experience. The giant shark is well designed and looks realistic throughout the film.

In terms of the plot, the first act of the movie is relatively slow, introducing the characters of the film and building up to the discovery of the Megalodon. However, once the giant shark appears on screen, the pace of the movie quickens, and there is a constant sense of danger and urgency. The final act of the movie has some clichés, but, overall, the ending is satisfying.

One of the things that make the film stands out is that it does not take itself too seriously. There is a sense of humour sprinkled throughout the film, which provides a nice balance to the horrific events taking place. The dialogue is witty in parts and engaging in others.

In conclusion, Meg is an entertaining, action-packed monster movie that will satisfy fans of the genre. The film boasts a talented cast, solid direction, and excellent special effects. Although the story is a bit formulaic, the film makes up for this with its stellar visuals and pulse-pounding action sequences. It is an enjoyable popcorn flick that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
