Manborg is a 2011 low-budget Canadian action-comedy film, directed and written by Steven Kostanski, who is known for his work in practical effects and horror films. The movie is set in a dystopian future where robots and demons have taken over the world, and the remaining humans who resist their rule live in hidden underground bunkers.

The film's protagonist, a soldier called John, dies while fighting the evil Count Draculon and his army of cyborgs, demons and mutants. His body is found by a group of scientists who revive him as a half-human, half-robot cyborg, with improved strength and abilities. This is how the film's title is derived as the character is now known as Manborg.

Manborg then teams up with three other humans - a tough rebel leader named #1 Man, Man's younger sister Mina and a Japanese martial arts fighter named Justice - to try and defeat Draculon and his army once and for all. Together, they travel to Draculon's base, where they encounter various enemies such as a Nazi scientist, cyborg gladiators and a demonic army. The group also receives help from humorous characters such as Upgrade, an eccentric weapons dealer and Doctor Scorpius, a mad scientist who had previously worked for Draculon.

Throughout the journey, Manborg struggles with his identity, as he tries to come to terms with how he is no longer fully human. Additionally, Mina and Justice develop a romantic relationship, which adds a touch of lightheartedness and humor to the otherwise violent and dark story.

The film's visual aesthetics bear a resemblance to the 80s and 90s sci-fi and action films, with its over-the-top violence, cheesy dialogue, practical effects, and intricate costume designs. The film's low-budget nature, however, is quite apparent, as evidenced by its limited shooting locations, stilted dialogue delivery, and at times unconvincing special effects.

Despite its flaws, Manborg has garnered a cult following for its ability to capture the retro-horror and sci-fi genre. It is an entertaining film that blends humor, action, and horror elements into a nostalgic experience. The film is laced with subtle references and homages to classic sci-fi and horror films like Terminator, Robocop, and Evil Dead, making it a treat for fans of these genres.

The performances of the lead actors are decent, with Matthew Kennedy's portrayal of Manborg being especially noteworthy for his physical acting abilities, despite wearing prosthetics and armor throughout the film. The supporting cast also provides good comedic relief, ensuring that the film is never too serious or boring.

The film's score is also notable, as it heavily employs synthesizers and electronic sounds, adding to the retro sci-fi feel of the film. The soundtrack is composed by Steven Kostanski himself, along with his music collaborator Jeremy Gillespie, who is also known for his work in the horror genre.

Overall, Manborg is an entertaining and fun film that is perfect for a late-night viewing with friends who enjoy campy and retro sci-fi and action films. While it may not be a cinematic masterpiece, it embodies a spirit of creativity and humor that will leave you feeling entertained and amused.

Manborg is a 2011 action movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 11 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.5.
