In the movie Man, Woman and Child from 1983, Martin Sheen plays Robert Beckwith, a successful publisher living in San Francisco with his wife, Sheila (Blythe Danner), and their two children, Jean and Billy. They seem to have the perfect life, but everything changes when Robert receives a letter from a Frenchwoman named Marie-Christine (played by Nathalie Nell).

The letter reveals that Robert had a brief affair with Marie-Christine twenty years ago, and she has just found out that she has a son, named Jacques (Sebastian Dungan), who is Robert's child. In shock, Robert decides to go to France to meet Jacques, and have him come and live with them in San Francisco. Sheila is devastated by the news, but she agrees to let Jacques come and live with them.

As Jacques arrives in San Francisco and starts living with the Beckwith family, Robert tries to bond with him and make up for lost time, while Sheila struggles to come to terms with her husband's infidelity and love for his newfound son. Meanwhile, their children Jean and Billy also have a hard time adjusting to the new family dynamic, and often feel left out and neglected.

Craig T. Nelson plays Terry, a close friend of the Beckwiths who is also romantically interested in Sheila. He tries to comfort her through the difficult time and help her deal with her feelings towards Robert and Jacques. However, as the family starts to slowly unravel and secrets are revealed, tensions begin to rise and relationships are put to the test.

Man, Woman and Child is a heartfelt drama that explores the complexities of love, family, and infidelity. The movie tackles difficult subjects such as the consequences of past mistakes, parental neglect, and the emotional toll that secrets can take on relationships. Martin Sheen delivers a powerful performance as Robert, torn between his love for both his wife and son, while Blythe Danner delivers a nuanced portrayal of a woman struggling to hold onto her family and confront her own feelings.

Despite its heavy themes, the movie also has heartwarming moments of connection between the characters, and ultimately delivers a message of forgiveness and acceptance. For those who enjoy poignant family dramas with powerful performances, Man, Woman and Child is a must-see.
