Man on a Ledge is a 2012 crime thriller film directed by Asger Leth and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura. The film stars Sam Worthington as a former police officer Nick Cassidy, Elizabeth Banks as a detective Lydia Mercer, and Jamie Bell as Cassidy's younger brother Joey. The film opens with Cassidy checking into a luxurious New York City hotel, where he orders a lavish meal, writes a note, and enlists the help of an attractive hotel employee to stage a suicide attempt. As the police and emergency personnel arrive on the scene, Cassidy escapes through the window and steps out onto the ledge of the hotel building, some 200 feet above the street.

Cassidy's precarious position attracts a large crowd of onlookers, including members of the media, who begin to speculate as to his motives. Detective Mercer is assigned to the case and quickly identifies Cassidy as a former cop who was convicted of stealing a valuable diamond from a wealthy businessman, David Englander (played by Ed Harris).

As the minutes stretch into hours, Cassidy reveals his true intentions to Joey, who is posing as a construction worker on a nearby building site. Cassidy explains that he is innocent of the theft charge and that he has come to the ledge to prove his innocence and clear his name. He believes that the diamond is still hidden in Englander's building, and that his daring act of public protest will force Englander to open himself up to scrutiny.

Meanwhile, Mercer struggles to balance her duty to negotiate with Cassidy and her growing belief that there is more to his story than meets the eye. Englander himself becomes increasingly agitated as the situation drags on, fearful that the truth about his business practices may be exposed.

The plot of Man on a Ledge unfolds gradually, with multiple twists and turns that keep the audience guessing as to Cassidy's true motives and the outcome of his standoff with the police. Along the way, the film explores themes of justice, redemption, and the corrupting influence of power and wealth.

The performances of the lead actors are strong throughout, with Sam Worthington effectively conveying Cassidy's desperation and determination, and Elizabeth Banks bringing a nuanced emotional depth to her role as Mercer. Jamie Bell brings a youthful energy and vulnerability to his portrayal of Joey, and the supporting cast is solid.

The action sequences in the film are well-executed, particularly the scenes of Cassidy navigating the narrow ledge high above the city streets. The tension builds steadily throughout the film, culminating in a satisfying and surprising conclusion that ties together the various plot threads and character arcs.

Overall, Man on a Ledge is an engaging and entertaining crime thriller that manages to balance suspenseful action with strong character development and thematic depth. Despite occasional lapses in logic and credibility, the film is well-crafted and engaging, and the performances by the core ensemble cast make it a worthwhile viewing experience.

Man on a Ledge is a 2012 action movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 42 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.6 and a MetaScore of 40.
