Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is a musical comedy film released in 2018, directed by Ol Parker and starring Lily James, Amanda Seyfried, and Meryl Streep. It is a sequel to the 2008 film Mamma Mia! and is based on the songs of the popular Swedish pop group ABBA. The film mainly focuses on the backstory of Donna Sheridan, the central character from the first film, played by both Meryl Streep and Lily James.
The movie begins with Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried) who is now pregnant and is trying to reopen the hotel that her mother Donna had run on the Greek island of Kalokairi. As Sophie travels back to the island, she remembers her mother Donna, who died a year ago. She also recalls how her mother met and fell in love with her three possible fathers â Harry (Colin Firth), Bill (Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd), and Sam (Pierce Brosnan) â all of whom are set to arrive for the reopening of the hotel.
Meanwhile, the movie flashes back to 1979, where young Donna (Lily James) is a free-spirited university graduate who decides to travel the world. She ends up on the same Greek island where she falls in love with handsome American sailor Sam (Jeremy Irvine). She forms strong bonds with her best friends Tanya (Jessica Keenan Wynn) and Rosie (Alexa Davies) during her stay on the island. Her lust for life and newfound independence is shown in her performance of the song 'When I Kissed The Teacher,' one of ABBA's upbeat hits.
As the movie progresses, we see the younger versions of her three possible fathers as well, Harry (Hugh Skinner), Bill (Josh Dylan), and Sam (Jeremy Irvine). Donna's love triangle with Sam and another man is explored, along with the origins of her lifelong friendship with Tanya and Rosie. Their group becomes known as "Donna and the Dynamos" as they perform the iconic ABBA song "Super Trouper" on a Greek island party.
The movie continually shifts back and forth between the past and the present, as Sophie discovers more about her mother's relationships and self-discovery. We see Lily James wonderfully embodying the youthful spirit of Donna and getting lost in our hearts with ABBA's music. Meryl Streep only appears briefly in the sprinkled cameo scenes, but makes the most of them, leaving a lasting impact as Donna.
The plot is weaved together through the ABBA songs, including hit tracks like "Mamma Mia," "Dancing Queen," and "Waterloo." The sets and landscapes of Greece are breathtaking, and the musical numbers are full of energy and excitement. The upbeat dance choreography, performances, and colorful costumes make the film a true delight for fans of musicals.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, while based on the same premise as its predecessor, focuses more on Donna's backstory and personality. It is a perfect movie for fans of the first film or anyone who loves ABBA's music, a catchy pop-musical with a feel-good vibe. It's the kind of film that will leave you singing and dancing long after the credits roll.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is a 2018 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 54 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.6 and a MetaScore of 60.
