Malliswari is a 1951 Telugu-language film directed by Bommireddy Narasimha Reddy, who was considered one of the pioneers of Telugu cinema. The film stars Doraiswamy, Subba Rao K.V. and Surabhi Kamalabai in the lead roles. The plot revolves around a young girl named Malliswari (Kamalabai) who lives with her father Raghava Rao (Doraiswamy) in a small village. Raghava Rao is a poor landlord and his only asset is a piece of land. One day, the local zamindar (landlord) Viswanatha Sastry (Subba Rao K.V.) comes to buy the land from Raghava Rao. He offers a very low price, which angers Raghava Rao. In order to teach him a lesson, Malliswari decides to go to Viswanatha Sastry's house and ask for a higher price.
Once there, she charms Viswanatha Sastry with her innocence and beauty. He offers to pay a higher price for the land and also gives her a gold coin as a token of his appreciation. Malliswari is overjoyed and returns home with the money. However, her father is suspicious of Viswanatha Sastry's motives and asks her not to meet him again.
Meanwhile, Viswanatha Sastry becomes obsessed with Malliswari and decides to marry her. He sends his men to bring her to his house, but Raghava Rao intervenes and saves her. In the ensuing struggle, Raghava Rao is killed and Malliswari is taken away by Viswanatha Sastry.
Malliswari is kept under strict vigilance in Viswanatha Sastry's mansion. She is treated well but is not allowed to meet anyone outside the house. She befriends Viswanatha Sastry's second wife Lakshmi (also played by Kamalabai) who sympathizes with the young girl's plight. Lakshmi tells Malliswari that Viswanatha Sastry has a terminal illness and that he wants to marry her before he dies.
Malliswari is horrified at the thought of marrying Viswanatha Sastry and decides to escape from the mansion. With Lakshmi's help, she manages to flee and starts a new life in a different city. She falls in love with a young man named Chandrashekhar (played by NTR), who happens to be Viswanatha Sastry's nephew.
The rest of the film is about how Malliswari and Chandrashekhar fight against Viswanatha Sastry's evil intentions and how they finally triumph over him.
Malliswari was a landmark film in Telugu cinema and is considered a classic even today. The film was praised for its strong message against feudalism and for its portrayal of a brave and independent young girl. Kamalabai's performances as both Malliswari and Lakshmi were widely appreciated and the film proved to be a turning point in her career. Doraiswamy and Subba Rao K.V. also gave excellent performances in their respective roles.
Overall, Malliswari is a must-watch for anyone interested in Telugu cinema history and for those who appreciate high-quality storytelling and performances.
