Mahakavi Kalidasu is a Telugu language historical drama film released in 1960, directed by Kamalakara Kameswara Rao and starring Akkineni Nageswara Rao in the titular role of the legendary poet and playwright Kalidasa. The film is considered to be one of the masterpieces of Telugu cinema and is a landmark in Nageswara Rao's career. The plot of the movie revolves around the life of Kalidasa, the celebrated Sanskrit poet, and his relationship with his muse Mallika, played by Sriranjani. It portrays the trials and tribulations of an ordinary man who transforms himself into one of the greatest poets India has ever produced.

The movie opens with a young Kalidasa living in a small village in India. He is a nature lover and a remarkable poet but lacks practical knowledge and education. He desires to become a renowned poet and sets out to acquire knowledge from other scholars. He travels to the royal court of Ujjain, hoping to study under the great scholar Vidyasagar (played by S.V. Rangarao). But, Vidyasagar ridicules him due to his lack of formal education, which leaves Kalidasa shattered.

He then meets the princess of Ujjaini, Vidyotama (played by Kanchana) who is fascinated by his poetry and intellect. She falls in love with him but is apprehensive about marrying him due to his lower social status. Kalidasa overcomes all obstacles and convinces the princess to marry him. The couple is blessed with a child, but tragedy strikes when the child dies due to a snake bite. Heartbroken and dejected, Kalidasa loses his poetic abilities and longs for his child's return.

The second half of the movie portrays Kalidasa's rejuvenation as an artist with the help of his muse Mallika. She inspires him to write again, and together they produce several great works of literature including the famous epic poem Meghaduta. Mallika changes Kalidasa's outlook towards life, and he learns to appreciate the beauty of nature and the simple pleasures of life.

The film is notable for its exceptional performances by the lead actors. Nageswara Rao is excellent in his portrayal of Kalidasa, balancing the poet's vulnerability, intelligence, and romanticism. Sriranjani shines as Mallika, delivering a nuanced performance as the muse who inspires Kalidasa's art. S.V. Rangarao, as always, excels in his role as the strict scholar who initially belittles Kalidasa's talents.

The music of the film, composed by Pendyala Nageswara Rao and sung by legends like Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao and P. Leela, is another highlight. The songs are melodious, soulful, and lyrical, beautifully complementing the film's narrative.

In conclusion, Mahakavi Kalidasu is a timeless classic that showcases the journey of a man from humble beginnings to literary greatness. It is a testament to the power of art, love, and nature in shaping an individual's life.
