Madalena finds herself in charge of her family after the death of her father and decides her only option is to continue his career as a boatman carrying people across the local river. The villagers do not trust a woman to carry them and their valuables across the river, which sends all their custom to a rival boatman. In desperation, Madalena turns the local priest to help her solve her business and personal problems.
