Award winning Ma Vie En Rose, translated to My Life in Pink in English, is a Belgian French language drama co-written and directed by Alain Berliner. The film stars Georges Du Fresne in the lead role of Ludovic Fabre, a young boy who decides that he should actually be a girl and begins wearing girl's clothing and embarrasses his family by telling people that he will be a woman someday. Ludovic's parents Hanna and Pierre are played by Michèle Laroque and Jean-Philippe Écoffey. The movie is characterized by several vivid dream sequences involving Ludo's wishes for his life and the future in which he questions his gender identity.
As Ludo explores his ideas about what he should be his family, and his mother in particular, has difficulty accepting it. At first they brush off what they perceive as his eccentricities as childish behavior. As he begins to test boundaries with a neighbor boy, his family becomes more worried. He continues to bend gender roles and, after a public display in which he tries to kiss the neighbor boy during a play, he is kicked out of school at the behest of the other students' parents. Hanna blames Ludo as the family is snubbed by their neighbors and sends Ludo to live with his grandmother. Ludo's grandmother encourages him to be whatever he pleases. Meanwhile, Ludo's father is fired and the family must move to another city and so Ludo goes with them.
At costume party in their new neighborhood, Ludo is made to switch costumes with his new friend, a little girl. Wearing a gown in front of the party, Ludo's mother slaps him and has a breakdown. Ludo vows to run away from his ignorant family and live in the make believe world of the doll Pam, a representation to Ludo of a more feminine ideal who has a perfect marriage (a concept that fascinates Ludo in light of his own family's dysfunction). After Hanna has her own fantasy vision about Ludo really leaving with the doll Pam, she finally accepts her child's choices.
Ma vie en rose is a 1997 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 28 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.5.
