Lucknow Central is a 2017 Indian musical drama film directed by Ranjit Tiwari and starring Farhan Akhtar in the lead role. The film is set in the city of Lucknow and revolves around a group of prisoners who form a band and plan to escape from the prison while participating in a musical competition. The film begins with Kishen Mohan Girhotra (Farhan Akhtar), a young aspiring singer and musician from Moradabad, who dreams of becoming a famous singer. However, his dreams are shattered when he is wrongfully accused of murder and sent to Lucknow Central Jail. In the prison, Kishen meets some fellow inmates - Victor (Deepak Dobriyal), Dikkat (Inaamulhaq), Purushottam (Rajesh Sharma), and Sanju (Gippy Grewal) - who have all also been wrongly convicted.
Kishen learns that there is a music competition held every year in the prison, and the winning band gets to perform at a high-profile event in Lucknow. Kishen comes up with a plan to form a band with his fellow inmates and participate in the competition. Initially, the other prisoners are hesitant, but Kishen manages to convince them through his passion for music, and they start rehearsing together.
As the band progresses, Kishen gets in touch with NGO worker Gayatri Kashyap (Diana Penty), who helps him in his quest for justice. Gayatri provides Kishen with the evidence he needs to prove his innocence and get his name cleared. However, Kishen's plan hits a snag when he learns that the dreaded gangster, Babumoshai (Ronit Roy), who he had crossed paths with earlier, is out to get him.
The film moves forward as the band prepares to take on a rival band in the prison's music competition. They face various challenges along the way, including Babumoshai's threats, and an unexpected betrayal from one of their own. Will Kishen and his band be able to overcome these obstacles and win the competition? Will Kishen be able to prove his innocence and walk free?
One of the film's highlights is the music. The songs, composed by Arjuna Harjai, Rochak Kohli, and Tanishk Bagchi, are well-crafted and catchy. The performances by the lead actors are also noteworthy, particularly Farhan Akhtar, who shines in his role as Kishen. Abhinay Raj Singh, who plays the role of a prison guard, also delivers a convincing performance.
The film does have its flaws, however. The plot seems a bit contrived at times, and some of the dramatic moments feel forced. The film also tends to stretch out certain sequences, making the pacing a bit uneven. Nevertheless, the film manages to keep you engaged, thanks to its strong performances and memorable music.
Overall, Lucknow Central is an enjoyable musical drama that offers a unique take on the prison genre. The film manages to strike a balance between its serious themes and its fun musical sequences, making it a worthwhile watch.
