Lowlife Love is a Japanese drama film released in 2015. The movie is directed, written and edited by Eiji Uchida. It stars Masahiko Aoki, Masato Arai and Denden in the leading roles. The movie tells the story of Tetsuo (Masahiko Aoki), an independent film director. He has directed two movies in the past, and now he is trying hard to fund his third movie. With no financial support, he is forced to live with his girlfriend, Minami (Maya Okano), and her daughter while trying to make ends meet.
Tetsuo is an egoistic, selfish and a frustrated person. He is constantly arguing with his girlfriend, and his behavior with women is very derogatory. Nevertheless, he is passionate about filmmaking and thinks his talent and dreams should be enough to overlook his behavior.
One day, he meets Ken (Masato Arai), an old friend who wants to produce a movie with Tetsuo. Ken is willing to provide the funds for the movie, but on one condition - Tetsuo will have to take in his daughter, Aoi (Chika Uchida), as an actress in the movie.
Tetsuo agrees to take in Aoi but is not happy with the idea. Aoi is a simple girl who is passionate about acting and dreams of becoming a famous actress one day. As Tetsuo starts working with Aoi, he discovers that she has a raw talent that could take her places.
Meanwhile, Tetsuoâs behavior with women only gets worse. He has an affair with the actress, Miyuki (Kanji Furutachi), who is also desperate to get a role in his movie. He also engages in a physical relationship with his former lover, Ayako (Yumi Goto), who is now married and pregnant.
As time passes, Tetsuo realizes that he has hit rock bottom both personally and professionally. His selfish behavior has cost him dearly, and he has lost the trust and support of the people around him. He is now left with nothing but his dream to make a good movie.
The movieâs plot explores the dark side of the film industry, which is often shrouded in deception, exploitation, and abuse. It shows how people exploit othersâ dreams and aspirations and how vulnerable individuals are often manipulated and taken advantage of.
The actorsâ performances are outstanding, particularly Masahiko Aoki, who brings out the complexity of his character very well. Masato Araiâs portrayal of a producer who has his own agenda is also commendable.
The movieâs cinematography is impressive, with the camera movements giving an intimate view of the charactersâ surroundings. The use of handheld cameras and Dutch angles gives a raw feel to the film, depicting the charactersâ unstable emotions and their distorted reality.
Overall, Lowlife Love is a well-directed, well-written and well-acted movie that tells a raw and honest story of the film industry. The movie is not for everyone, as it has mature themes and explicit content, but itâs a must-watch for those who enjoy drama and indie filmmaking.
