Loverboy is a complex and emotionally charged film directed by Kevin Bacon and starring Kyra Sedgwick in the leading role. The movie tells the story of Emily Stoll (Sedgwick), a young woman who has always struggled with intimacy and connection in her relationships. As a child, she spent most of her time alone, reading books and dreaming of a magical world where she could find true love and companionship. As an adult, she becomes obsessed with the idea of finding the perfect man, and starts to seek out sexual encounters with strangers as a way of filling the void in her life.

The film is set in different time periods, featuring flashbacks to Emily's childhood and adolescence, as well as scenes from her current life as a struggling artist and single mother. These shifts in time help to build up a fuller picture of Emily's personality and backstory, as well as her current struggles with intimacy and trust. Along the way, we meet a number of characters who play important roles in Emily's life, including her overbearing mother (played with great depth by Marisa Tomei), her estranged father (played by Bacon himself), and her son Paul (Dominic Scott Kay), who is both the light of Emily's life and a constant reminder of her own past traumas.

At the heart of the film is Emily's relationship with her latest lover, Paul (played by Matt Dillon), whom she meets early on in the film at a local diner. The chemistry between Sedgwick and Dillon is electric, and their scenes together are some of the film's most memorable moments. As Emily falls deeper and deeper into her obsession with Paul, she begins to lose touch with reality and spirals into a dark and dangerous place that threatens to consume her entirely.

Despite the heavy subject matter, Loverboy is also an incredibly visual and stylistic film. The cinematography by Richard Rutkowski is stunning, with breathtaking shots of the ocean, grungy alleys, and intimate moments between characters all captured with great care and attention to detail. The film also features a killer soundtrack that includes songs by artists as diverse as PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, and Tom Waits, adding to the film's already impressive atmosphere and pacing.

Finally, it's worth noting that Loverboy is ultimately a story about healing and finding acceptance in oneself. Through Emily's experiences, the film explores the many ways that we try to fill the voids in our lives, whether it be through sex, drugs, or other means of escape. It's only through confronting our own demons and accepting our past that we can truly move forward, and that's a lesson that Emily learns over the course of the film. While Loverboy can be a difficult and at times painful film to watch, it's also a deeply rewarding and thought-provoking work that lingers with you long after the credits roll.

Loverboy is a 2004 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 24 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.3 and a MetaScore of 45.
