This is a romance drama based during the 1920's following a man named Martin Synder. Martin Synder is a small time criminal in Chicago. One day a pretty dancer named Ruth Etting loses her job at a night club where she dances. Martin meets her the same day and they really hit it off. He thinks Ruth has some true talent. Martin starts managing Ruth's dancing career. With his help, Ruth climbs up the corporate ladder of success in the entertainment industry. She becomes famous as a Broadway actress and jazz singer. With success, Ruth's happiness and success is threatened by Martin's controlling and obsessive actions.
