On a post-apocalyptic Earth, humanity has been forced to live underground for seven years after a cataclysmic event caused a mutation in insects and other creatures, turning them into dangerous monsters. Joel Dawson (Dylan O'Brien) is a young man who dreams of reuniting with his girlfriend, Aimee (Jessica Henwick), who was separated from him during the evacuation. When Joel's colony receives radio communication from Aimee's colony, he decides to embark on a dangerous journey across the monster-infested surface to find her.

Joel is not equipped for such a journey, but he quickly learns to survive with the help of Clyde (Michael Rooker), a seasoned survivor who has made peace with the new world. Along the way, Joel encounters a variety of monsters, including giant snails, giant centipedes, and giant frogs. He also meets other survivors who have formed their own small communities, some of whom are friendly, and some of whom are not.

Despite the dangers, Joel is determined to find Aimee, and his journey brings him face-to-face with his own fears and insecurities. Dylan O'Brien gives a nuanced performance as Joel, a timid and awkward young man who discovers his own courage and strength. Jessica Henwick is charming as Aimee, the girl who inspired Joel to become a better person. Michael Rooker is delightful as Clyde, the gruff but lovable survivor who teaches Joel how to survive in the wild.

Love and Monsters is a thrilling adventure film that combines humor, action, and heart. The monsters are well-designed and genuinely scary, but the film never loses its sense of fun. The post-apocalyptic world is richly imagined, with plenty of intriguing details and visual flair. The film also has a strong ecological message, highlighting the importance of respecting and preserving our planet's biodiversity.

Director Michael Matthews keeps the pace brisk and the tone light, balancing the film's darker moments with humor and whimsy. The film's special effects are impressive, especially considering the relatively modest budget. The film's score, by composer Marco Beltrami, is suitably thrilling and emotional.

Love and Monsters is a welcome addition to the post-apocalyptic genre, offering a fresh take on familiar themes. The film's themes of love, friendship, and the power of self-discovery will resonate with audiences of all ages. With its strong performances, impressive visuals, and engaging storytelling, Love and Monsters is a must-see for fans of adventure and sci-fi.

Love and Monsters is a 2020 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 49 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.9 and a MetaScore of 63.
