In the movie Lion (2016), directed by Garth Davis and based on a true story, we follow the journey of Saroo Brierley, a young boy from a rural village in India who gets lost and separated from his family. The film stars Dev Patel as the adult Saroo, Nicole Kidman as his adoptive mother, Sue, and Rooney Mara as his girlfriend, Lucy. The movie opens with Saroo as a young child, played by the adorable Sunny Pawar, who lives a simple life with his mother, older brother, and little sister. One day, while out scavenging for food with his brother, Saroo falls asleep on a train and wakes up miles away from home, unable to find his way back. He ends up in Kolkata, a bustling city where he doesn't speak the language and is forced to fend for himself on the streets for several months.

After narrowly avoiding some dangerous situations, Saroo is eventually taken in by an orphanage and put up for adoption. He is soon adopted by Sue and John Brierley, an Australian couple, and brought to live with them in Tasmania.

The movie then jumps ahead to Saroo as a young adult, struggling to reconcile his love for his adoptive family with his longing to reconnect with his birth family in India. He becomes fixated on using Google Earth to trace his steps and find his hometown, a seemingly impossible task given the vastness of India and the fact that he can't even remember the name of his village.

The second half of the movie is a tense and emotional journey as Saroo becomes increasingly obsessed with his search for home, much to the chagrin of his girlfriend Lucy and even his adoptive mother, who worries about his mental health. But Saroo can't let it go, and with the help of a fellow Indian student at his university, he painstakingly pieces together clues and makes breakthroughs that lead him closer and closer to his birth family.

Throughout the movie, we see flashbacks to Saroo's life in India before he got lost, which are filled with warmth and love but also poverty and hardship. We also see the impact that his disappearance had on his birth family, including his mother (played by Priyanka Bose), who never gave up hope that her son was still alive.

One of the standout performances in the movie is by Dev Patel, who brings a raw vulnerability and earnestness to the role of Saroo. He convincingly portrays the character's inner turmoil as he grapples with his mixed feelings of gratitude towards his adoptive family and his longing for his birth family. Nicole Kidman is also fantastic as Sue, Saroo's adoptive mother, who is both supportive and protective of her son while also navigating her own complicated feelings about adoption.

Overall, Lion is a moving and inspiring movie about family, identity, and the power of the human spirit to persevere against all odds. It's a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the deep, abiding love that binds us all together.
