Lingaa is a Tamil-language action-adventure film released in 2014, directed by K. S. Ravikumar and starring three of the most prominent Indian actors of the time: Rajinikanth, Anushka Shetty, and Sonakshi Sinha. The movie's plot is centered around a retired engineer named Lingaa, who returns to his ancestral village in Tamil Nadu, India, where he attempts to honor his grandfather's dying wish by saving the village's ancient dam from being demolished.
The film opens with an introduction to Lingaa, an intelligent and skillful man, who resides in the city and leads a luxurious life. One day, Lingaa receives a letter from a lawyer in his hometown, informing him about his grandfather's dying wish. Before dying, Lingaa's grandfather writes a letter that explains his contribution to building an important dam in their village, which once saved the villagers from a severe drought. He wants his grandson Lingaa to collaborate with the villagers and save the dam from demolition, which he believes will benefit the entire community.
Initially, Lingaa refuses to go to his ancestral village and tackle the issue but later tends to his grandfather's wishes and heads to his home. Upon reaching the village, he is welcomed by the locals who are excited to see the grandson of the great philanthropist. In the village, Lingaa meets Bharathi, played by Anushka Shetty, a beautiful and confident girl who has a great passion for history. Bharathi is determined to save the dam from demolition, and she instantly forms a bond with Lingaa, who she believes can help her save the dam.
On the other hand, Lingaa also encounters a corrupt politician named Kumaraswamy, who wants to demolish the dam and use the land for his own selfish purposes. Kumaraswamy also tries to bribe Lingaa, offering him huge amounts of money if he helps him demolish the ancient structure. However, Lingaa refuses his offer and instead, he sets out to unite the villagers and save the dam.
In the process of saving the dam, Lingaa discovers an interesting piece of history associated with the site, leading to a flashback sequence with the introduction of Rajinikanth's second character, Raja Lingeshwaran, a king from pre-independence era who had once ruled the village. The flashback reveals the love story between Raja Lingeshwaran and his queen Lakhsmi, played by the stunning Sonakshi Sinha. The flashback adds a new dimension to the story, revealing a lot more about Lingaa's family and the culture of the village.
Kumaraswamy, who is continually trying to demolish the dam, gets his hands on a treasure map, which shows the location of an enormous amount of treasure hidden inside the dam. With greed overpowering his morals and principles, he threatens the villagers and plans to destroy the dam to get hold of the treasure. However, Lingaa transforms himself into a hero, fights against Kumaraswamy and his goons, and saves the dam from complete demolition.
To conclude, Lingaa is an entertaining movie with a perfect blend of action, romance, drama, and a pinch of history. The performances of Rajinikanth, Anushka Shetty, Sonakshi Sinha, and other actors are commendable. The music composed by A. R. Rahman is good, and the cinematography by R. Rathnavelu is impressive. Lingaa is a must-watch for Rajinikanth fans and for people who enjoy action-packed dramas filled with heartwarming moments.
