Life is a 2017 sci-fi thriller movie directed by Daniel Espinosa and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ryan Reynolds in lead roles. The movie is set in the International Space Station (ISS) where a team of six astronauts discovers the first-ever evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. The movie begins with the astronauts receiving a soil sample from Mars, which contains a single-celled organism. The astronauts, including David Jordan (Jake Gyllenhaal) as the senior medical officer, Miranda North (Rebecca Ferguson) as the quarantine officer, and Rory Adams (Ryan Reynolds) as the blissfully ignorant engineer, call the organism "Calvin" and start studying it.

Initially, Calvin is a small, cute and harmless creature. But it quickly evolves into a multi-celled organism with remarkable intelligence, strength, and a fierce survival instinct. When the crew attempts to study Calvin further, they accidentally cause it harm, and in response, Calvin becomes increasingly aggressive towards the astronauts.

The tension and terror escalate as Calvin grows larger and more powerful, ultimately leading to a life-or-death struggle between the astronauts and the extraterrestrial organism. As the team members get picked off one by one, the remaining crew members must find a way to defeat Calvin and prevent it from reaching Earth and causing chaos.

Throughout the movie, the audience experiences the same sense of claustrophobia and disconnect from Earth that the characters in the ISS experience. The cramped quarters inside the space station, the weightlessness, and the constant threat of a catastrophic malfunction all contribute to a sense of unease that builds steadily throughout the work.

Jake Gyllenhaal's character is contemplative and intense, often lost in his own thoughts while he watches over the other members of the crew. He has a tragic backstory hinted at throughout the movie, and it adds another layer to the unfolding events. Rebecca Ferguson's character is smart, tough, and competent, but she hides a personal secret from the rest of the team. Ryan Reynolds provides some much-needed comedic relief, but he also plays the role of the team's unorthodox leader and becomes the catalyst for much of the disastrous events that unfold.

The cinematography in Life is gorgeous, especially in the scenes where the camera floats out of the space station to show the vastness of space. The special effects used to create Calvin are excellent, and his appearance is genuinely unsettling, with its many tentacles that seem to stretch out and reach for their prey.

The movie may draw some comparisons with the 1979 classic Alien, as both films revolve around extraterrestrial creatures tormenting a crew stuck in space. However, Life stands firmly on its own as its own unique film. While the basic premise is similar, the tone, setting and character dynamics are different enough to create its tension and vibe.

In conclusion, Life is an exciting and suspenseful sci-fi thriller that delivers on all levels. It combines horror, suspense, and action to create an intense and thrilling viewing experience. The performances from the lead cast are excellent, and the special effects are stunning. The movie will keep you on the edge of your seat as the crew of the ISS struggle to survive against an all-too-real and terrifying enemy. If you're a fan of sci-fi or horror, then Life is a must-watch movie.
