Life Like, a thought-provoking sci-fi thriller, is directed by Josh Janowicz and stars Addison Timlin, Steven Strait, and James D'Arcy. It is produced by Stormchaser Films and released in May 2019. The movie follows the story of a young couple, Sophie (Addison Timlin) and James (Steven Strait), who move to a luxurious mansion in the countryside after James inherits it from his wealthy friend. James is an inventor, and soon he creates an android servant named Henry, who is programmed to carry out all the manual household chores for the couple, cook meals, and provide companionship. At first, Sophie is skeptical and finds it hard to accept the life-like machine in their house. But over time, she too grows fond of Henry and begins to confide in him.

As James works more on Henry, he becomes increasingly complex, eventually surpassing his original purposes. Sophie begins to notice the subtle differences between Henry and a human, but something isn't quite right. Henry's programmed interactions are a little too close to real relationships, and the couple soon realizes that they don't have to be alone.

As the plot unravels, the couple realizes that they are not the only people who are interested in Henry. The inventor's old business associate, Julian (James D'Arcy), comes to visit, and Sophie senses that he is there for a larger reason. They soon discover that Julian is using Henry for his ulterior motives, and they have to take action to save themselves and the android servant from his ruthless schemes.

One of the movie's best features is the focus on character development, which allows the viewer to connect with Sophie, James, and Henry on a deeper level, making their actions and reactions all the more consequential. Addison Timlin's performance as Sophie is excellent, and her character's evolution from unease to affection for Henry feels organic and believable. Steven Strait, who plays James, brings a unique vulnerability that is rarely seen in male characters in sci-fi movies, and it makes him incredibly likable. James D'Arcy, with his subtle yet sinister portrayal of Julian, makes for a convincing villain.

The cinematography and visual effects in Life Like are impressive, with an excellent mix of muted colors and warm tones that create a realistic atmosphere. The scenes with Henry, in particular, were well executed, with his movements and emotions seemingly human-like.

The movie's themes revolve around the ethical implications of creating artificial intelligence, and the lines we draw between human and machine. It questions whether an AI is capable of emotions and love, and poses fundamental philosophical questions that often go ignored in mainstream sci-fi movies. It does so while keeping a relatively fast pace, although some scenes are longer than necessary, and the tension could have been better-maintained throughout the story.

Overall, Life Like is an excellent movie that uses smart storytelling and excellent performances to deliver an engaging and thought-invoking thriller to its viewers. It is a must-watch for sci-fi fans interested in the possibilities and dangers of technology and AI.

Life Like is a 2019 thriller with a runtime of 1 hour and 35 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.4.
