The First World War has come to an end with millions of men dead from around the World, the French military give Major Dellaplane the difficult job of identifying the deceased soldiers and informing their relatives of the death. Into the life of the major comes Irene, who is searching for her husband and believes he is one of the dead of the Great War. Dellaplane and Irene form a strong bond, which is called into question when Dellaplane begins to suspect Irene's husband may not be amongst the dead.
