Lelam is a Malayalam action-thriller film, released in 1997, directed by Joshiy and produced by Thomas Korah. The film features Suresh Gopi, M.G. Soman, and Siddique in the lead roles. The story revolves around a family feud, which has been a long-standing issue between two rich and powerful families in a small village. Kuttan Pillai (Suresh Gopi) is a retired army officer who returns to his village to spend time with his family after many years of service. He finds that his family has become deeply involved in the feud with the rival family, which has escalated over the years, and the rift is so severe that it has split the village in half.
Kuttan Pillai, who is known for his brave and daring acts during his time in the army, becomes a ray of hope for both families. He tries to resolve the issue by making peace between the warring families. His efforts are initially ridiculed by both sides, but he persists in his mission to bring peace to the village.
Meanwhile, Kuttan Pillai also has to deal with his own issues, particularly his complicated relationship with his father, who has suffered a stroke and is bedridden. Kuttan Pillai's mother (Sukumari), who is the backbone of the family, also has to deal with her own troubles, with the family's finances in dire straits.
As Kuttan Pillai well knows the dangers he is facing, he has to face the enemy head-on in his quest for peace. With the help of like-minded individuals from both sides, he starts a dialogue to bring an end to the bloodshed.
However, the situation takes a dramatic turn when one of the family members is murdered, and a false accusation is made against Kuttan Pillai. The entire village turns against him, and he is forced to take refuge in the jungle.
The rest of the movie is about how Kuttan Pillai attempts to clear his name and bring the culprits to justice. At the same time, he also manages to bring the two warring families together, resulting in a happy ending.
One of the strengths of Lelam is the suspenseful storyline, which keeps the viewer engaged from start to finish. The movie also features great performances from the main cast, particularly Suresh Gopi, who is at his best as Kuttan Pillai.
The film's direction is top-notch, with Joshiy crafting a visually stunning movie that is also emotionally engaging. The cinematography excellently captures the beauty of Kerala's rural landscape, while the background score adds to the intense drama.
Lelam is not only an action-packed thriller, but it also showcases the power of the human spirit in bringing about change and reconciling differences. It is a must-watch movie for any Malayalam cinema enthusiast, with its engaging script, superb performances, and visual treat.
