The film revolves around the story of a man named Vijay Khanna who is an honest and hardworking journalist. He has a strong belief in the principles of Gandhi and fights against corruption in the society. Vijay meets Rajnarayan Singh, a wealthy businessman and politician who tries to bribe him. When Vijay refuses to accept the bribe, Rajnarayan frames him in a false case which leads to Vijay's arrest.

Vijay's arrest brings his family to the brink of financial ruin. His sister, Sujata, is forced to take a job as a maid in Rajnarayan's house to support the family. Meanwhile, in jail, Vijay meets his old friend Shekhar who is now part of Rajnarayan's political party. Shekhar convinces Vijay to join their party and use his influence to bring about change from within the system.

Vijay joins the party and starts working with Shekhar to expose the corruption within the party. He wins the trust of the party members and gradually rises up the ranks. He becomes the leader of the party but his ideals are in conflict with the corrupt practices of the senior party members. Amidst this conflict, Vijay falls in love with Rajnarayan's daughter, Anjali.

As the party leader, Vijay starts implementing his vision of a corruption-free society. He introduces new policies and works towards the welfare of the poor. However, his efforts are met with resistance from the old guard of the party who are resistant to change. The situation comes to a head when Rajnarayan frames Vijay in a false murder case. Vijay is arrested again, and the party is left without a leader.

The rest of the film follows Vijay's struggle to prove his innocence and clear his name. His sister Sujata plays a key role in gathering evidence to prove Vijay's innocence. Along the way, a lot of political drama unfolds, and the movie keeps the audience on the edge of their seats until the thrilling climax.

The acting in the film is top-notch, especially Dilip Kumar's portrayal of Vijay Khanna. His character is a reflection of the common man, who is fighting against corruption and injustice. Vyjayanthimala, who plays Anjali, also delivers a stellar performance. She does justice to her role and brings a lot of depth to her character.

The music of the film is composed by Naushad, and the lyrics are penned by Shakeel Badayuni. The songs are still popular, even after more than five decades since the film's release. Some of the popular songs from the film include "Tere Husn Ki Kya Tarif Karun" and "Mere Naseeb Mein Aye Dost."

Overall, Leader is an excellent film that explores the themes of corruption, political drama, and love. It is a must-watch for Bollywood fans and lovers of political dramas. The film's message of the importance of integrity and honesty is still relevant and inspiring.
