Lazy Susan is a new comedy movie released in 2020, directed by Nick Peet and starring a star-studded cast, including Sean Hayes, Maria Shriver, and Leah Huebner. The film revolves around a middle-aged woman named Susan, portrayed by Sean Hayes, who leads a monotonous life in which she doesn't really have any responsibilities, ambitions or goals. This movie brings out the humorous side of human nature and how one needs to break free from their chains and explore the world with a perspective of their own.
Susan leads a life of laziness and disinterest, and despite being the youngest daughter in the family, she is still living with her mother who is a bit of a control freak. Susan's life is quite uninspiring, with no job, and no real purpose. She frequently wakes up at her leisure and does nothing much the entire day other than watching TV and eating junk food. She doesn't even bother to clean her room or help with the house chores, unlike her elder siblings.
However, one day everything changes when Susan's mother passes away, leaving her without anyone to provide for her. Suddenly, she finds herself alone and without anyone to rely on. At first, she tries to live the same lazy life she always had but soon realizes that she needs to take charge of her life. Hence she decides to take up a job, but as she has never worked in her life, it is quite a struggle for her.
Susan, being herself, doesn't take the traditional way of finding a job. Instead, she ventures into an unconventional line of work, including a stint working as a dancer in a nightclub. In doing so, she learns a lot about herself while also dealing with her preconceived notions about society and its expectations of people. Throughout her journey, she also works to heal her longtime estrangement from her older sister and reflective of the relationships in all our lives.
Though the film can be initially perceived as bizarre, absurd and contradictory, it has a refreshing, whimsical energy that keeps it engaging throughout. The central character, Susan is portrayed by Sean Hayes, is a highlight of the movie, and he has done full justice to the character. Sean's performance is raw and evokes genuine empathy from the audience, despite the character's comical nature.
Maria Shriver's role as Susan's deceased mother is relatively short but insightful, and she brings out the character's backstory well. Leah Huebner rightly plays the straight-laced character of Susan's sister, who initially holds a grudge against her but soon discovers the importance of family.
Overall, Lazy Susan is a perfect movie that presents the importance of self-discovery and taking initiative. It's a heart-warming comedy with the right amount of drama and humor, which will surely keep the audience entertained throughout. The movie depicts that it's okay to take risks, break out of one's comfort zone, and explore life beyond the mundane tasks. The film has a message that anyone can be productive in life if they make up their minds and take action accordingly. It is a must-watch for those who want to live their lives differently and explore the adventures of the world.
Lazy Susan is a 2020 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 31 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.4 and a MetaScore of 37.
