Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) is a successful engineer with a loving wife and daughter, until his life is turned upside down when a home invasion robbery leaves his wife and daughter brutally murdered. The suspects, career criminal Clarence Darby (Christian Stolte) and his partner Rupert Ames (Josh Stewart), are apprehended and brought to trial.
Assistant District Attorney Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) is assigned to the case and offers Darby a plea bargain in exchange for testifying against Ames. Despite Clyde's objections, Darby accepts the plea and is sentenced to a reduced sentence in exchange for his cooperation.
Ten years later, Ames is set to be executed and Clyde's deep-seated anger and desire for revenge boil over. He meticulously plans and executes a number of attacks against those involved in the plea bargain, sparking a city-wide manhunt, with Nick Rice at its head.
As the story unfolds, Nick Rice and Clyde Shelton engage in a game of cat and mouse, with Clyde always one step ahead. The killings are so precise and calculated that it is clear to everyone involved that Shelton must have some kind of inside knowledge of the legal system.
