In the movie Lavalantula, lava-breathing tarantulas emerge from fissures in the earth and wreak havoc in the city of Los Angeles. The film stars Steve Guttenberg as Colton West, a former action movie star who now works as a fireman. He teams up with his estranged wife, Olivia (played by Nia Peeples), and his teenage son, Wyatt (played by Patrick Renna), in a desperate attempt to stop the giant spiders from destroying the city.
The movie starts with scenes of the Los Angeles skyline, which is soon interrupted by the first sighting of one of the giant spiders. The spider attacks a construction site and the workers try to fight it off with bulldozers, but to no avail. The spider is unstoppable and continues to wreak havoc throughout the city.
Colton West is introduced as a former action movie star who is now a fireman. He is called to the scene of the spider attack at the construction site and is soon joined by Olivia, his estranged wife who is a news reporter, and Wyatt, his teenage son. The three of them witness the devastation caused by the spider and realize that they must work together to try to stop it.
The film is full of action and suspense as the group battles the spiders throughout the city. The spiders are not only gigantic but also deadly, as they can breathe fire and shoot webs that trap their victims. The characters come up with creative ways to fight the spiders, such as using fire extinguishers and gasoline to create makeshift flamethrowers.
In addition to the action, the film includes moments of humor, particularly in scenes involving Colton West. Guttenberg's portrayal of the former action star brings a sense of comedic relief to the tense situations. There are also occasional nods to Guttenberg's previous film roles, such as a moment where he channels his character from the Police Academy movies.
The film also explores the relationships between the characters, particularly between Colton and Olivia. They have a complicated history, and it is revealed that their separation was due in part to Colton's obsession with his action movie career. As they work together to stop the spiders, they begin to rebuild their relationship and come to appreciate each other once again.
Lavalantula is a fun, action-packed movie that follows in the tradition of other monster movies like Godzilla and Tremors. The special effects are impressive, and the giant spiders are both terrifying and entertaining. However, the heart of the film lies in the relationships between the characters, particularly between Colton and Olivia. The movie strikes a balance between comedy and suspense, making it an enjoyable watch for fans of the genre.
